Depends on a few factors, such as your past history- whether you have used opiod-based drugs or alcohol regularly (this will decrease your sensitivity to the medication, meaning you will require more for an analgesic effect). 20mg is not a huge dose, I am assuming you have been ordered 2 daily (12 hours apart?) this is the dosing regime we use. You will notice the effect of the drug within maybe 40 mins of taking it, but dependent on your pain you might need something stronger.
