    I don't understand the illustrated answer. If the black king is in check, it must be his move. He'd go where the check mark is.

    How does the Next image track? The Black king has not moved. Both white pieces have moved.

    Yes, but it's rare. Extraordinarily rare. For this to happen your opponent must also have a piece left in the game. If you have only a King and a Knight, and your opponent has ONLY a King left, you can not mate.

    Consider Stamma's mate, and the game between Jesus Nogueiras and Maikel Gongora from the 2001 Cuban Championship.

    Both present Checkmate when the winning player has only a King and a Knight left, but the losing player has a King and one other piece which is actually used against him. The king is boxed in and mated and can not escape due to his own piece blocking the escape.
