Help answer this question below.
Because those questions are so basic and fundamental that people dont generally remember such specific pieces of information that they learned at such a young age (10, 11, 12 years old).
The questions themselves usually refer to some obscure detail OR some obvious detail, neither of which you can remember from your textbook....
It is a tricky thing. People are smarter than fifth graders in total knowledge. The show is slanted toward the kids, for the knowledge that is taught to them now, is ancient to the contestants. It is like asking regular joes to answer college math questions, for it is a specialized thing, and obviously, those who have the most experience or have the most to gain are catered to. Get those kids to answer questions their parents/teachers would know, and it will be a different story!
I TRULY believe it's because the producers are "SCARED TO DEATH" to use REAL Qs which would be asked at the 5th grade level to a REAL PERSON.
THE REAL Qs and answers would "break the bank" AND "the backs" of the producers.
AND I think it shows "the dumbing-down" of America.
I won;'t even watch the program any more.
Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Yes, that is my real last name!
Sources: Because you asked.
It's a pretty tough curriculum these days. But seriously, I managed to outsmart mine on a daily basis.
That show is a farce. The "contestants" are screened and chosen for their stupidity.
LAWL crack up. apparently he doesn't pass as a troglodyte, so i guess you're alright. i suspect my ancestors' gene pools were chlorinated before both of us were conceived.
because a fith grader today is supposed to learn more than most high school graduates from those days... even though most of them learn not near as much as the kids on the show... i also think that they prompt the kids with most of the questions before the recording.
those questions are bullshit i didnt know any of that in 5th grade
I'd like to know where that 5th grade class is! My daughter is in 5th grade and it seems as though some of those questions are way above her level.
Because people forget even the simplest things when we get older.
i defy one of those fifth graders to come and perform my job....
"smart" is a matter of preparation
My "game show dummies" theory has always been that the lights come up, the red light on the camera comes on and the brain turns to Jello. Many of these shows have a test the contestant have to pass to get on the show, so they have to have some measure of inteligence.
Is taking steroids a slapa toa goldja, or a compliment to him in showing that we can change his image?

Has a fourth grader or younger actually been a contestant on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Do you think they would finally outsmart the fifth graders?
