That may well depend on the rights to privacy laws on where you live. It may be considered a medical history that is confidential or not. It also may depend on if on your application, they ask directly about hospital stays. I recall on my Navy app (Can Forces), that question was asked and a yes answer required some extra detailed info. There is usually a little disclaimer on these apps, at the end, when you sign it, that "all the above is true to the best of my knoledge" etc, that if they find out you tried to mislead them or not directly answer a question, you are precluded from employment. I have a similar type of question on apps for diving school grads and did have one kid lie about his past, by dancing around the question. He no longer works for me. Had he been honest, even if he did do jail time, I likely wouldn't have canned him.

I was a background investigator, for three years, with a police department. if it happened in your past, it will be discovered, either by your admission, your neighbors, or on a polygraph examination. Your past drug useage, could have an adverse effect on your application, depending on what you consumed and for how long. some drugs destroy brain cells and cannot be replaced. LSD is a main drug factor, because of flashbacks. Do not be surprised if you are rejected. The public enstills great trust in its police officers. Good Luck.

I have been a cop for fifteen years and I did backgrounds for many years on new recruits. You will be directly asked when, what, how much, and what type of drugs you consumed. Depending on what you took, and the length of time you took them are all taken into consideration. But to be honest with you by you saying you took a number of drugs, and had to stay in rehab, if I was doing your background, I would probably recommend you not be hired. Besides, it will come out in your polygraph anyway. Sorry.....
