Getting there is often the big expense. Moving around Europe can be inexpensive if you use a rail pass. Staying in youth hostels and camping cuts down on accommodation costs. If you are a student, get an international student card because it allows for discounts. Lonely Planet books specialise in instructing the reader how to travel on the cheap.

Europe unfortunately requires money to live, eat and get around--and there is no way around that. Yes, there are hostels. Yes, there are food vendors Yes, there are buses and trains that are relatively inexpensive. However, it still adds up and then you will want to do things like museums, events, festivals. There are books on how to travel on a budget and it can be done--but budget travel is subjective.

You have to shop really carefully for flights, and you'd be better going off peak when the prices are lower, in winter time. Play around on Expedia with dates of travel until you find the best deal. The other thing you could do once you're in Europe is ''Couch Surf''. Couch surfing is when you go and stay with people who offer up their sofas, for free. http://www.couchsurfing.com/
