Look up the Uncertainty Principle. This is an observed phenomena where in light (most demonstrably) behaves as a probability wave until it interacts with an interfering agent at which point it seems to "solidify" into a certainty. Let me put it another way. A photon, in modern physics, doesn't really come into "existence" until it is observed - it behaves like a wave of potential and can be in multiple places at once (Quantum Non-Locality). When it is interacted with, it solidifies at the point of interaction and begins to behave as a point particle.
