Why do shops store eggs "dry" on the shelf, but when we take them home we put them in the fridge?

The store knows how long it will have a particular dozen, but a given consumer might make a dozen eggs last a couple months, and although (as the Reader's Digest said) eggs can be held at room temperature for "several weeks," after a couple months the membrane of the yolk collapses and it smells. Also, the fridge is a good place for eggs not to get accidentally broken.
