Sounds like an engine misfire. A sparkplug or plugwire is occasionally failing. A tune-up should be done. It should fix the problem.

You're reading I have a 1990 Volvo 240 wagon. Whenever the car is idling it makes a sound about every 3-4 seconds which sounds like it is "gasping for air". Occasionally the car will stall when it is idling if the engine is not being revved.
