Try dialing *228 and pushing "send" - you can upgrade your phone's software to the latest version. Sometimes that helps. You may want to try resetting the phone - while it's on, pull the battery out, wait 30 seconds, then reinsert the battery and power it back up. If those don't work, it may be a Verizon issue - the tower in that particular area may be down or damaged. I'd call 611 and report the issue.
