LOL with the English language I think it would be easier to ask which words obeyed the rules:) and didn't seem weird or awkward.

- Lol is an acronym such as SCUBA or LASER and yet still part of modern usage. Its an easier way to express emotion through a medium that does not allow the user to see expressions. But I agree on your second point.. but who wants to do things the easy way?

- I've noticed that a LOT of our words really originate from somewhere else. A lot of Latin, french, greek.....those kinds of languages.

- I have studied etymology amongst other things in university. I find words fascinating. Not I am not a geek ( I do not bite the heads of chickens) however I am a bit "bookish".

- One of my favorite things to do is read. I read all 23 volumes of the Funk and Wagnalls Wildlife encyclopedias three times. I really enjoy "dry" reading. I used to think I wanted to be an etymologist at one time.
