I only went once. All you need is deep pockets and plenty of KY jelly, because you will probably need both.

If the divorce involves children, you may have a hearing on the issue of temporary custody of children, but more than likely the judge will sign the temporary orders without any court appearances.

If you and your spouse cannot agree on some of the specifics of the divorce, (child custody, property, etc.) you may also be sent to mediation. Mediation is technically not "court" and the things you discuss there cannot be brought up in court. So, for example, if you offer to pay alimony in exchange for the house, and never came to a conclusive signed agreement during the mediation, you are not bound to pay alimony simply because you offered it in mediation. (Of course, the judge might find that way based on other reasons.) Anything you agree to in mediation will be drawn up for you and your spouse to sign, those items will then go to the judge for approval.

After all of these steps, you should have only one cour appearance where each side will explain to the judge what they want and why they should get it. The judge will then make a final determination as to who gets what. Then you'll have to wait for the freshly drawn up papers to be signed by the judge before the divorce is officially final.

Then, you're done, *unless* your spouse appeals the decision, in which case you'll probably have to go back to court.

It will depend on how nasty it gets... Mine had us in court 13 times in 11 months BEFORE trial.

I agree with the KY comment. Unless it's absolutely essential to fight over, let it go!
