  • It's too early to declaw a kitten when it is alive. Neutering can happen at 3 months now.
  • I've read that declawing a cat is very painful and I know that animal clinics strongly discourage that practice. Neutering, I am fairly certain, is around six months of age. Any vet, animal hospital, or shelter would be happy to make the appropriate arrangements for you.
  • Declawed? It's always too early. You can get them neutered at 12 weeks if you must hoe into it that early. As Sixty B says six moths is a more recommended age for neutering.
  • Not sure about neutering, but please don't get your kitten declawed. It's unnecessary and, IMO, a little bit cruel. Get your kitten a scratching post or mat, and keep its claws trimmed, it's not that hard.
  • I'm going to declaw my kitten and have it neutered in the same visit - that way it only has to be put out once. Give me a break people. If we can circumsize babies, we certainly can declaw cats. They won't remember it, they recover quickly, and anyone who is as sick as I am of getting scratched, it is well worth it. I love my cat, but I also love my furniture. :)
  • If you can't control your cats scratching habits get a dog! One of the most fascinating aspects of a cat is their retractable claws, that is what makes them so unique. I've had 7 perfect cats of varying ages, 6 of them male and NEVER was scratched up. Furniture can be replaced or covered it isn't alive. Scratching posts and large cat condos to climb on usually curb any behavioral issues and keep that cat from boredom. Declawing is illegal in England and Canada because it is considered mutilation, unnecessary, and cruel. How would you feel if someone cut off your finger to the knuckle because they didn't like your nails or you accidentally scratched them? That is what you are doing to your beloved pet. It's your cat and unfortunately your choice, at least Google it so you're informed as to why we disagree. You owe it to your wonderful kitten. (Circumcision is also mutilation and unnecessary, if a man wants a circumcision let him decide when he's grown. There are far too many screw ups a doctor can do to such a small, squirming infant and I wouldn't want my son injured in such a private way when I'd kill anyone for cutting any other part of his anatomy.)
  • You can get your kitten fixed at 8 weeks and it has to be over 2 lbs. Also don't get your kitten declawed.
  • Please read this before you decide to declaw your cat. It's not just removing the claw, it's amputation of the last joint in your cat's toes. This is illegal in other countries and some veterinarians in the US will no longer perform the surgery. http://www.declawing.com/
  • i just got a kitten yesterday..my mother is set on getting her declawed but after i read this stuff its making me not want to and i explained it to her but she wants it done...:( oh and can u get all the shots and everything done at once?
  • I agree with most everyone on here when I say don't get your cat declawed. Another aspect you have to consider is if your cat is declawed and gets outside it is defenseless. If it is attacked by another animal it is a sitting duck without it main defense mechanism. It wouldn't even be able to run away since claws are used for traction as well as climbing trees, fences, etc.
  • With new drugs and procedures, alot of vets are neutering kittens at 8 weeks of age with no ill effects. I would ask you to PLEASE reconsider declawing your kitten though! It is a cruel procedure and you leave your pet defenseless if it ever escapes to the outside. I have a beautiful girl we rescued six years ago. She sits with one paw off the floor, ALL the time. We cannot touch her paws and she has now stopped using the cat litter box. We have a cat shelter in town and I have seen cats there that have been mauled because the were unable to get away from a neighbors dog or protect itself. It really is an inhumane thing to do to something that you are suppose to love.
  • Most Vets. will tell you to wait until the kitten is at least 6 months old.
  • A kitten can be neutered after 2 1/2 months. It should be declawed after it is about 97 years old!
  • WHAT GET A CAT DE-CLAWED !! THAT IS ILLEGAL. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING OF!! A CAT NEEDS THEIR CLAWS FOR VARIOUS THINGS. A CAT CAN BE NEUTERED AROUND 6 MTHS BUT GOT TO WATCH THOUGH CAT COULD COME INTO SEASON AROUND THE SAME TIME. BUT THE WAY YOU ARE TALKING I THINK YOUR CAT IS GOING TO BE SHUT IN ALL THE TIME SO THAT WANT BE A PROBLEM.
  • For the people that are not answering the questions on here. If you dont believe in declawing then thats fine but dont come on here and spread your opition around and not answer what someone is asking. They are on here asking about what age you can declaw and all you are doing is giving them your reason why they shouldnt and stating that they are dumb or stupid. If you dont have an answer about the q then just leave your opition to yourself. They have the right to do what they feel is best and they came to ask a q, not get your option about the situation.
  • You should consult a vet on that. Just call and they will gladly tell you all you need to know about it.
  • I definitely recommend declawing any cat that will be living permanently inside your home. I've lived with cats all my life and every one has gone through the procedure with no problems whatsoever. In fact, we have a 3-month old going in for declawing this week. They recover quickly from the surgery and lead normal, healthy lives ( much better than feral cats or pet cats kept outside )!
  • It is always 2 early to declaw! Google it! I've had MANY indoor cats for 20 years and NEVER declawed them. It is unnecessary, cruel, and while that is MY opinion, it is considered in the cats benefits not my own. I have raised a feral for 12 years, and worked w/others. He is the most WONDERFUL little friend I've ever had, the smartest in the house and very discriminating in who he trusts, but once he does, he's yours for life. That is the gift of a feral and well worth it. Not all ferals are the same, but they are still amazing animals and so are outdoor cats. Retractable claws and agility are what make a cat a cat. Anyone who disagrees should just get a dog. I have a 6 ft. tall cat condo(ebay) and my cats LOVE to scale it and dig their claws in for a good scratch/stretch! The couch is safe because it's far more fun to climb the condo! My opinion mind you, but mutilation for the sake of a couch is wrong. If you really want you can teach your cat not to scratch. Are you willing to try
  • Unless the kitten is dead, declawing is pretty much always a bad idea. . Neutered? Twelve to fifteen weeks. . On the declawing thing, if you don't want a pet with claws, get a rabbit.
  • Declawing is barbaric, and I am amazed that it is legal in a country like the United States. It involves amputation of the first joints of the toes, and will affect the cat badly for the rest of its life. It can cause pain, 'phantom limb' problems and infections. Also, cats rely on their claws to climb and move about. Please don't declaw your cat. If it is so important to you to avoid scratches on your furniture, perhaps you shouldn't be getting a pet at all.
  • One it is a domestic animal, two it is property, and any damaege dome by your property you are liable for. get over it. I have 5 cats and they are just fine indoor kittys with out front claws and yes they can defend themselfs.
  • people shouldnt be so critical about this poor girls question she asked a question hoping for an answer and all she got were put downs and rude comments. although i dont reccomend getting your cat declawed thats your business so if you want to do it then i wont critisize you for it. im not 100% sure about the proper ages but i highly reccomend speaking to a vet grfore making any appointments and that wont cost anything to ask them that cuz when you call to make an appointment the vet will most likely ask how old the cat is and tell you id=f that is a good age or not. if they dont ask just make sure they know the age bfore booking.
  • Declawing is so barbaric, cruel and painful that it's been made illegal in most of Europe. If you need a pet without claws, don't get a cat.
  • I cannot even begin to understand why anyone would consider owning a kitten if they were thinking about getting it declawed, that’s mutilation, if you want something pretty to look at then get a fish, leave the poor kitten to find a happy life with someone who actually cares for it and treats it like a living being, not some sort of toy, taking away it's main defence, the ability to grip, walk and run, really think about what your suggesting, I think it's sick and people that would even consider it to save a bit of furniture should be band from keeping animals full stop!!! So many animals are born disabled and your going to purposely disable one, people like you need locking up!!!
