  • My dad is a retired dermatologist and as a teenager I had prioral dermatitis which is directly related to stress(usually). The best thing you can do is keep your hands away from your mouth area. If it gets dry and scaly then moisten the skin and apply an OTC hydracortisone cream. If you develop acne, then apply a topical acne treatment preferably one with an antibiotic in it. Good luck.Also...while you are reading this don't put your left hand on your chin as to hold up your head. That's what I do when I read. Always aggravating the places that already exist. Quote from the Doc..."don't pick at your face"
  • Dont ever put hydracortisone cream on perioral dermatitis. I am suffering from it right now and i have personally witnessed it get worse because of using the steroid creams. I have been warned by quite a few doctors and a dermatologist not to use the creams also. I took a steroid pack to make it go away but it came back. I then used another pack and it only got worse. I am now on antibiotics and it seems to be improving. I completely agree with not picking at your face because it seems to reappear in all the places where I've picked at mine. I haven't been using topical acne treatments and that seems to be helping also. I've been using aveeno lotion with menthol and gold bond itching powder which seems to be mitigating the itching.
  • I went to a dermatologist and the only thing that has worked for my perioral dermatitis is an antibiotic called Solodyn. It's in the tetracycline family and is very very expensived. The cost is about $1400 for 30 day supply which is 30 pills. The dr gave me a discount card that I used in conjunction with my insurance which gave me $50 off per prescription so with my insurance it ended up being only $10. The discount card is good for 3 months supply. However, a generic like tetracycline or minocycline will also work but it just won't be as good. It went away after a few weeks on the antibiotics, but I finished the 3 month course of them, because as you know, you're supposed to finish the entire course of prescribed antibiotics for it to work like it is supposed to, as is with any antibiotic prescription. I definitely don't recommend using the steroid creams because when I first started to get it, I used my fiances steroid cream for his seborrheic dermatitis. It worked great for making the redness disappear, but if I went without it for one day, I'd have withdrawal from it and the redness would come back even worse. When I finally went to the dermatologist, he told me how bad that was to use it. So anyway, hope this helps.
