That's because there was a well up there and they had to fill the pail with water.

I think most wells are at lower elevations so the well does not have to be as deep to reach the water table. Unless it was a mountain stream or something, I'd say they were going to get the pail itself.

what idiot puts a well on top of a hill??? put it near the bottom so it will be closer to the water table and safer for clumsy kids too
