One of my goldfish died, but if I put a new smaller one in with the surviving fish, will the big fish eat it?

    not unless it is a lot smaller..goldfish are pigs: they will eat anything..but they usually do not eat other adult goldfish or even baby goldfish more than a few days old.

    As long as the smaller fish is not 'bite sized', it should be fine, goldfish are quite gregarious creatures.

    As for lifespan, a good age for a goldfish is 25 years, however disease, congenital illness and deformity from centuries of selective breeding, and maltreatment usually ensure that goldfish often don't live long.

    Some fish do eat smaller fish. I would go to a pet store, and discuss your options. Usually goldfish are good together but they dont live that long.

    eat it? Probably not but if it becomes aggresive it could kill it. Even that is unlikely at best.
