    When you want to show ownership.

    If the subject is singular, you add apostrophe s:
    Keithold's question was helpful.
    The cat's collar was too big.

    If the subject is plural, ending in s, you add an apostrophe:
    The dogs' food dishes were overflowing.
    All the vacuums' hoses detached, no matter which model.

    If the subject is already plural in form without ending in s, you just add apostrophe s:
    The children's department is around the corner.
