- Jaywhite, you may want to have a look at what the Statue of Liberty says. We DID open our doors to every "teeming shore". And that is the least of it. It IS our fault things are the way they are. We had years to examine and create changes and we did nothing. Only by accepting that responsibility can we hope to change it towards the betterment of EVERYONE IN IT......including my husband.

- Dave2222, I guess that I should be shipped back too. I am open in criticizing the government where it needs as I speak my mind whenever I choose. I also state that America is better than most countries out there an am open, as well, with the good things here. I am a 1st generation American so I have even shallower roots here than most AB members. So, since I do not agree with American politics and speak my mind, I should get the boot.

I have heard that it is not only Mexicans who have problems immigrating legally (I have heard that it is much worse now than in the 60's). America needs to improve the immigration process THEN enforce illegal immigration laws more strictly. America needs to fix its OWN problems.

- From what I have heard, it takes years to start the legal immigration process and it is not easily accessible to anyone. America also needs to provide easy access to classes teaching English and American history. I have heard from Mexican friends (both legal and *gasp* illegal) how hard it is. I have only had a few friends who were illegal immigrants but they were, at the time, fighting to get legal status and had been for a LONG time. I hope they finally made it. *makes note to call a couple of folks in California*

- We are in our 7th month of waiting to hear from JUST the first step we had to take. We would have started years ago but we did what our attornies told us to do and just waited.....and waited. They SWORE that immigration reform ws merely months away. In the end, it was tabled. Now we wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. The process literally takes YEARS.

- I remember one of my friends (an illegal immigrant) was in his second year of waiting and fighting. He had been on a waiting list all this time. They also kept "losing" his paperwork. He did not have an attorney because he was broke so he was doing it the best he could.

  He also spoke English but his family did not. They could not afford a class (there were a few free ones but they were always full with a waiting list) and would have had to take time off of work to do so anyways.

  My parents moved to Canada and had to lie about being Romani ("Gypsy") to get in. I know that he lied about that to get into America (I do not know if he had to). Before trying, my father taught my mother English and educated himself and her on Canadian and American history and government.

- It is a lengthy process done by government workers who don't give a damn when they hold someone;s life in thier hands. The first step is to pay a fee (they are expensive) and send in the paperwork. In our case, it was the I-130, but there are about 60 different ones to choose from, and if you choose wrong, then you go to the back of the line. There is no explanation, you either sink of swim. Luckily, we got it right.....the 2nd time. Then, they contact you via snail mail (of course) for an interview. You don't get to choose the date. They tell YOU. If you don't show up.....back to the end of the line you go.

- If they need further proof of hardship, as in our case due to my brain damage, then back to the end of the line you go until you DO have the proof they require. In our case it is going to be expensive. I need up-to-date brain scans within 2 months of the appointment date (another juggling act) by a physician. That will run us at least $2,000 which comes out of our pockets. Either that, or risk not having enough proof and.........you guessed it......back to the end of the line you go.

  The snail mail thing is a bit difficult. My friend was a migrant worker. His family moved from home to home, wherever they had the chance. Nowadays I would think that he has an email address and, actually, I hope he and his family succeeded.

- Thank God we aren't migrants. It isn't one fee.....it's about 6 of them. All together, we will pay about $1,600 - $1,800, not counting the medical scans. Not to mention also the income loss we will suffer from our business while he HAS to be in Mexico until he has the OK to return legally. Basically, it rips families apart. Every day we read on the immigration websites we belong to, families crying and their devastating losses and trying to come up with the money for all the fees. SOme of them have been apart for years. If the husband is caught coming across the border he will be banned for life. End of story.

Phillisn, I can hardly tell if they are female or male, how the hell can you tell their nationality, and even if you could, who gives a shit, there nationality has nothing to do with questioning or answering.

- I have always helped whoever needed it. Skin color was never the issue for me (obviously). Having one foot in each society, I can tell you for a fact two things: 1- the majority of the hispanics in this country ARE illegal, and 2- they are draining the medical portion of our government at a MUCH higher rate than any other group of people. That is why I am upset.
  
  I LOVE the fact that our entire nation is built on immigrants. Look how far we have come! I LOVE the fact that we have money to share in times of trouble with other countries. I'm very upset though, that the system is being drained. What's worse, I have no idea how to fix it. Does anyone here know or have any ideas?

I have been a hospital employee most of my life as well as, for most of it, underinsured or uninsured. - I already answered on someone else's comments. I answered "yes". Of course I would if that country let me! I am sorry you cannot get healthcare. We are stuck in the middle - we make too much for medicaid and not enough for health insurance to cover ourselves and the kids AND dental. No, it isn't the hispanics. Something is wonky with the government, and though I have tried to figure out how it could change to be better, I hate admitting it, but I do not have the faculties to figure it out.

I do not dislike Hispanics, Mexicans, Blacks, Jewish, Italians, Russians, Germans, Iranians, Iraquis, Pakistani, or any other nationality of people... ESPECIALLY if they are in the US and working, legally. I DO have a problem with illegal immigrants of ALL races and nationalities.

- Ugh! This question has been a scourge for me. I think it was the first question I ever asked, and I didn't get it quite right. I did not realize at that time that you could go into further detail on a question by answering it first. As a result, I felt that the best I could do was to reassure people that I would NOT DR them for anything they said. I wanted a bitch session, too. You want to know the truth? This thing with the illegal border crossings is not just about the illegal aliens from hispanic countries, but those of all ethnicities. The only reason why you hear so much about those from hispanic countries is because they are the most vocal about wanting those things they don't deserve when they come here illegally. We are sick and tired of people crossing our borders illegally and then demanding we give them the same rights as a legal citizen and then some as they destroy our economy and drain our social services while contributing nothing. Ever argument they make is completely bogus. There's not a job they do that an American citizen being paid a fair wage wouldn't. As for the corruption in their own governments and the poverty if they would stay there and do something to change that it wouldn't be that way. And I would really love to know when our country gave up sovernty over it's borders to countries like Mexico. Countries who scream bloody murder if we say anything about how they do things. I will say I have no problem with someone coming here legally. It's the illegal ones I have an issue with. Illegal aliens are crimianls and need to be treated as such. So are the people who harbor them. Plain and simple.

  To the person going off I was born here just like you were. This is just as much my home as it is your's. As for what happened in the past since the Native Americans also immigrated here from Asia Monior you're also the descendant of an immegrant just like I am. In fact not a single race on Earth originated here. We all came from Africa and moved out from there. Here's something else at those times there were no immigration laws or even a sovern state so no laws were broken. Nor am I responsable for any of the autrocicities that happened low those many moons ago. You want to yell at someone for that go find Custard's grave and have at it. What you also must not realize is that illeagal aliens also effect you just as much as it effects anyone else. The right of sovernty is just as much your's as mine. And Mexico is deciding we owe them rights over our borders. In fact Zandalee has the perfect anology for what's going on.

- Thats right! Native Americans "immigrated" here about ten thousand years ago from asia minor..laws sure were different then weren't they! I think you missed the whole point of those statements. The point that EVERYONE here is an immigrant...people shouldn't forget that...We might also do well to realize how government policy and NAFTA affect people. Those are things that have also changed in the past decades. Having a direct impact on people from other cultures and surrounding countries.

And my comemnt about not going off was for those who could discuss this without the hostility. No, the Native Americans were not here first. There were actually several waves of immigration over millinia by diffrent races and in some cases diffrent "breeds" (lack of better word) of humanoid co-exist here. The Governement of the United States of America made those immigrations laws. A goverenment which you, as a citizen, are a part of just like I am. These are your laws too. As for what happened back then as to now you're comparing apples to oranges and getting pears. At that time there were no immigration laws or a sovern nation so trying to compare the two is irrelavant. And nobody ever said what happened back then was right.   I also find it very obvious that you do not reside in a bordering state to Mexico. If you did, you may see the first hand effect of the overwhelmingly increasing population of illegal immigrants which are consistently flooding our borders.

  No, I am not Native American in the fact I do not belong to an Idian Tribe. I'm an Scotch-Irish American who's family has been here for over two hundred years. My Forefathers have served with honour in every War this country has fought including the Revolution. Do you want to know why we came here? Because the Engilsh were killing off every member of the Irish Royal Famlies they could get their hands on and taking our lands. And you really should learn your history. There was no centralized government in the United States until after the Revolution so I'd really like to know how anyone before that was illegally living off a non-existant governement. Also social services didn't exist untill the Great Depression. If you were poor too bad you died.

And it hasn't been until now that a single group of immigrants has come into out land illegally and refused to assimilate or even try in the slightest bit to become a part of our culture and then demand we accommodate them and their culture while giving them free housing, medical, food, and education without contributing one dime to pay for what they use. They even think they have a right to recieve Social Security and Wel-fare benifits without contributing to the funds. Every one else before this has tried to be good citizen and a strong part of this country while still retaining some of their culture. You also are not getting the point that even so-called Native Americans are not truely native. They migrated here from Asia Minor and took the land over just like any colonizing group through out history would have.

- They also never formed a goverment. There never was a sovern nation until after the Revolution. What was here were independently acting tribes who were losely alinged with each other. In reality there was nothing to steal because what is a sovern nation with a centralized government (one of the criteria you failed to mention)didn't exist. You need that certralized and recognized government to prove sovernty which the Native American tribes did not have. Also there was plenty of land here to go around so there really was no conflict there other then greed. You're also forgetting that as a citizen of the United States that sovernty you claim I stole also belongs to you. We're both Americans so all this crying about stolen sovernty doesn't hold water since it belongs just as much to either one of us.

Nah, I'll just sum it up. The Mexicans who have come here illegally basicly state that we owe them a place because their country is poor and corrupt and we are rich. Basically they want to break into our homes and get to stay with us supporting them because they did the dishes. Even their own president has said as much.

I might even still have the reports on how the ACLU is now filing suits on behalf of the illegals to protect their rights to cross into our country over privately held property where they cut down fences, leave behind trash, start wild fires, and have killed livestock. Oh, and a few ranchers. And is it any wounder that the Western United States is damn near on the verge of a race war? It's getting ugly, people. Really ugly.

- Nobody as far as I know, but that doesn't mean this is their native home land because it isn't. In fact unless you're from the center of Africa you're not anywhere near the place that's your ansetiral home. Every race moved out from where they started from due to overpopulation and migration of the animals as well as weather changes. That was pure greed and racism as I said before. There was no reason we could not have lived together in the vast wilderness of the America's so long as we learned to co-exist with one another. Now before you go any further the situation is very diffrent today then it was back then. We are no longer two "nations" trying to exist on the same contentient. We are one Nation and the sooner we start to realize that instead of bickering over stuff that happened ceturies ago the better off we'll be.

I often wounder what my life would have been like if the English wouldn't have marched in and given us the choice of die or to leave everything behind with no where to go. - Yes, it has and it's got to stop somewhere. Someone has to say "ENOUGH!". I can tell you from what I hear from my Uncle about how it is down there in the South West that time is now. We have to do something before it ends in blood.
  In realative thinking two generations isn't all that long. You've got a head start on us just from that. (Not trivilizing it because I'm sure it hurts.) And even over here my Uncle's run into the same problem with the documents. Seems there's been a lot of floods and fires or absent minded clerks. And really, what you have to go on is pretty much what all families who put children up for adoption or have had them put up by the State deal with. That's why I want to see changes in adoption laws.
  It's only life as we know because up till now we've known no other way. Doesn't mean it can't change.

I have nothing against Hispanics. My fiancée was born and raised in Mexico. However, she went through the process, came here legally, and became an American citizen.

The people with whom I have a problem are those people who come here illegally. I don't care where they come from originally. If they are not going to respect our laws and follow the procedures to legally enter the country, then I don't want them here.

- I saw a gentleman interviewed on tv recently regarding the illegal immigration issue. He painted a vivid picture. He said, "pretend you are in a Boston Whaler out in the middle of the ocean and all around you for as far as one can see are people yelling, 'please help me, I'm drowning.' Thousands and thousands for as far as you could see. You only have your small boat. What can you do? What's the answer? I thought it was a very sorrowful analogy but still now solution.

- It is a good analogy. As much as we might like to, we simply can't support all of the rest of the world. The solution is to create opportunities for prosperity in these people's homelands so that they don't feel a need to leave. The problem is the various governments and criminal organizations that are only concerned with their own wealth and power and care nothing for the people they exploit. How we overcome that problem I don't know.

- No, restrictions at all? That is a recipe for disaster. For one thing, we don't have the jobs needed to support everyone who might want to come here. Heck, right now we don't have enough jobs to support everyone who is already living in the country. Additionally, we have the right to control who comes into this country. This is particularly true of those that would do us harm. By your logic we don't have the right to keep criminals, terrorists, and other destructive people out. If you say that it is not fair to equate those that simply come here looking for jobs with these violent people, I am not. However, whatever means illegal immigrants use to get into this country could just as easily be used by these more violent people. If there were no restrictions on who could enter the country then there would also be no way to prevent the violent people from getting in. So, your assertion that the US should not restrict who can enter the country shows a complete lack of concern for the well being of society.
  
  BTW, by what authority to you claim that this is a rule of God. Who gave you the right to speak for the All Mighty?

I mainly dislike people in general who take advantage and drain our economy. Everyone wants a better life and I've met some wonderful Mexicans and Hispanics who are loving, kind, gracious, and some of the hardest workers I know.

- I don't like 'em draining the economy, either. My husband has his own business (well, WE own it), pays the taxes, doesn't cheat customers and tries to maintain his dignity. But it can be hard for him to feel a part of this particular society due to resentment and racism. The guy works harder than anyone I've ever known and is an excellent provider. He has his issues like everyone else, but is still a good human being.
  
  I'm not sure how much of it is the Hispanics and how much of it is the way the system itself is set up....and I don't have any answers to contribute, either. I DO know one thing, though. If I wanted a better life for my family and doctor care for my children, I'd come here, unfortunately.

- There's a big economic differential between Latin American and the U.S. -- Mexico and countries further south offer little to nothing in the way of opportunities, it's completely understandable that people want to come to the U.S. to provide for their families. There is no moral failing in that: people want to look after their own. The rabid hostility that arises in this debate is a sign of poor character and lack of appreciation for others: everybody wants a better life, that is not a sin.
  
  We need to try to help Latin America improve their economies to reduce that pressure to migrate north. We need to provide jobs for Americans, too. We need to regulate who can enter the country. We need to consider individual situations when deporting people who have been here a long time. There's a lot of sides to this story, and any simplified and angry attitude is distorted thinking.

I think of myself as color-blind but I find that I do have preferences. I love Latins, and Asians more than I love people of other races including my own. But, after a while, my esteem for people of other races increases as I get to know them.

I have no problem with hispanics or any other people being here..I see quite a few answers here talking about how awful illegal immigrants are(may i point out that mexicans aren't the only people to immigrate here! Doh!)I wonder how many of these people that are so against immigration are full blooded native americans...'cause if you aren't..that means that there was a time when a family member of yours was an immigrant here..maybe even illegal. I was raised with the notion that this country opened its arms to people of all races, creeds, colors, etc. I still happen to believe that. Personally, I feel national borders are silly. I would tear them down. There is no difference between me and somebody born in another country, state, city, block. Why should there be any barriers between us? No logical reasons, only emotional ones. Unfortunately.

I dislike 'mono-cultures.' I taught ESL for a couple of years and so miss the variety of cultures, especially since I now live in a predominantly Anglo-Saxon based small town.

That partly why I love shopping at multicultural centres like Toronto so much, from time to time.

  On my neighbour: she's more of a broken person now, in some ways. And her husband lives with pain daily. I pray for them, from time to time, when I walk past their home --- I can't help but feel for them, even though she's reaping the consequences of her own bad decisions. My parents & I have meant to have these neighbours over for a bon fire at some point --- they need friends, even though I would be very cautious and not trust her much. (She simply hasn't proven herself trustworthy --- I believe in extra firm boundaries in relationships around people like her.)

I do and I'll tell you why.Everyone acts like we are a country made from immigrants so the way its happening now is ok. Its not. The difference is people used to come here to be part of THIS country-not to try to turn this country into theirs. People used to hit the borders and couldnt wait to learn english, learn all they can about this country and work their asses off to make it better -here. One of the things that angers me is that alot of Mexicans and other illeagals come here to work and send most of their money back home for their families. How does this help our country? The parents dont seem to want to learn or teach their childern english so they go to our schools and in alot of cases there are so many non english speaking students that the ones who speak english are forced to learn at alot slower pace and dont get the attention they need. Our children suffer. They come here and get free healthcare and now hospitals are actually having to close. Again we suffer. I am not a racist and I do want everyone in the world to have an oppurtunity for a better life but they have to be willing to work hard for it-just like we do. Learn the language, go thru the proper channels to get legal, and most importantly BECOME an American. Quit waving your Mexican flag around and desecrating ours. If the country you left is so great-go back there. And to the Mexicans and any others that come here leagally or work to get legal, and want to be a _____________ -American , Welcome!!!!!!

The problem I have is not with Mexicans in general. It is the ones who come here (from anywhere I mean, not just Mexico) and don't give a damn about this country. If your husband came here and is living out the American way of life and cares about this country than I have no problem with him being here but if he doesn't give a damn then I wish he would go back and take all the people that were born here and don't give a damn with him.

You question is vague, where do you mean by here? Do you mean on Answerbag? Do you mean just in the world no specific place? Do you mean in the United States? If you mean do people randomly dislike Hispanics here on AB or any place, the answer for me is no I don't dislike Hispanics. Some of the best friends that I have ever known so far, are Hispanic and of Mexican decent. I love Mexican culture and food and the Mexican Horse culture. I think Mexicans or any other Hispanic people are welcome in the United States too, provided they come here legally and they intend to become a viable, productive and loyal citizen of this country. If they are coming here illegally, and wanting to take welfare, and all the while showing their allegiance to what ever country they came from, then no they aren't welcome. The same goes for any other people coming to the US with the same intentions. No other country in the world would allow any of this, including Mexico. If people went to Mexico illegally and did some of the things that illegals do coming to the US, they would be tossed into a Mexican prison so fast they wouldn't know what happened. Or maybe they would be dead. America is the only country that allows herself to be raped repeatedly, but I believe she is starting to get really sick and tired of it.

- What's a pragmatist? If I were going to generalize about hispanics, it would be that they're very hard workers. My brother in a law owned a construction company & he had men from Belize & Guatimalia work for him & they were amazing. (I don't know if they're considered hispanic, the truth is I'm not that bright)

I was trained in construction by Mexicans. That's why I'm so good and fast at it. I only wish I spoke Spanish better!

I dislike ANYONE - regardless of ethnicity! - illegally crossing our borders and making it their life's work to sponge off our/my welfare system for generations!
I do NOT automaticly dislike ANYONE based on race, ethnicity, etc.
My son has a Hispanic sister-in-law; my cousin has a half-Hispanic grandchild; another cousin has a half Negro grandson.
People who live in racially divided houses should not throw stones.

  Anon: I know exactly what you mean. I can't pretend it doesn't happen. If that is indeed your only issue, then you would LOVE my husband. I qualified for SSI several years ago, but we have yet to accept the benefits, partially because my husband says we can manage without it, even thought my qualification also means that I cannot work. As a result, we run our own company. In the process, we also run the gamut of a zillion people who automatically hate him because he is a potential illegal (in their eyes). He could be the best American the country has ever seen, and all they will ever see is the color of his skin. Have a great day!

- Nope, it won't. EVER. As long as I love the man, I will have this to contend with. Police will overstep their boundaries, and some people will put thier noses in the air. And I couldn't care LESS, as long as me and mine are left alone. We're never the first ones to be ugly, but we are fully capable of matching someone else's attitude.

I strongly dislike illegal aliens being here. They are a drag on our economy, our health systems, our infrastructure and our public education system. They've brought diseases into this country that had long been eradicated here. I have no respect for them or those who support them.

I have nothing against legal immigrants, wherever they come from, nor those of hispanic descent. In fact, multiple members of my family have legally immigrated here. It only makes me resent illegal aliens more.

On that note, I'll unsubscribe.

- so Phillis tell me something, please. Why is it that in Mexico you never hear Mexican children crying? This would make a great question on AB. But I noticed that the only babies crying were the ones who weren't Mexican. Mexican babies, the minute they cried would be swept up into someone's arms....Maybe that is why. Mexicans seem to be much more tactile with each other than more 'uptight' cultures.

- It's true!!! They aren't much for discliplining, though. They have never had anything, so they think nothing of destroying the property of others :(

If he is legally here and obeys the same laws as everyone else-then, he is just fine. Illegal aliens are the problem-I wouldn't sneak into France or Germany and try to get away with it-thats crazy and a sub-zero life.

I do not dislike Hispanics in America. I have some very good friends that are Hispanics. All of the Hispanics I know have a very good work ethic, VERY strong familial bonds, sons and/or daughters in our armed forces, and are deeply religious. Who could have a problem with that?
