Help answer this question below.
Everybody on here seems to have quite high IQs.
I'm not sure whether that's because they're lying, only people with higher IQs are answering, (because people with lower IQs don't want to answer), or because mainly people with high IQs are attracted to AB for some reason.
Anyway, to get to my answer, last time it was 'officially' checked, my IQ was 136.
I did a BBC Test the Nation IQ test a few weeks back, and on that my IQ was 127. On another, random internet IQ test, my result was 89 (I do question the reliability of that one, unless I was having a really 'off' day...)
But honestly, depending which IQ test you do, depends what result you get.
So say Joe got an IQ of 100 on one test, on another it might have been 120, and on another 90.
I think I care about it to a point, because if somebody told me my IQ was low, I'd be quite gutted.
But then again, whatever IQ score I get, it won't change the way my mind works, or the way I solve problems etc.
Ultimately my brain's still the same, no matter what number you attach to its ability.
I think its about 120 in the morning and drops to 80 or so late in the day.
Based upon an IQ test I took on the internet a few years ago, my IQ is 139. According to a standardized test I was given back in 1971 by the Cohasset public schools, my IQ is 135.
I suppose I would care if it was lower, but it is very easy to be modest about it when it is high :-)
What's yours and do you care?
Having thought about this some more, I have decided that I definitely DO care what my IQ is. I'm not sure I would be posting it on the internet if it was 90. Its not that I think there is anything wrong with having below average intelligence. I just think that it is a plus to have above average intelligence.
=========================================
Edit:
Before any of us go getting uppity about our IQs, I would like to relate a couple of life experiences. The first is in regards to one of my brothers. I come from a family of seven, and he is number six - my baby brother. He is a certified genius, with an IQ over 200. The testers told him that they couldn't acurately rate his IQ with the standardized tests, that to get an acurate reading, they would need to send him for special testing, which he declined. He graduated from high school at age 15, and started college on a full scholarship at 16. Here are my observations about him: He is one of the smartest people I know, but he has about the least common sense of anyone I know. He is not a very fast reader (in fact I read at twice the speed that he does), but he retains EVERYTHING he reads indefinitely. He is a great dad to his kids, as long as nothing is out of the ordinary, then his poor wife has to deal with five kids rather than the four they have together, since he has about as much common sense as his kids do. How has his intelligence helped him in his life? I don't see that it has. He gets easily bored with things, and would rather go write a poem or story than learn something that will advance his career. How about remembering everything he reads? I suppose that it is great, if you want him to quote to you a passage from Dante's Inferno, or if you want to know what happened in the Little Orphan Annie comic strip from a Sunday in 1988. I have never seen how he has been able to turn this into an asset in his life.
The other experience I would like to relate is about a time when I worked as the Comptroller for a start-up software company. In the early days, the company consisted of me, and six hardware and software engineers. There was the one who could look at 20 pages of computer code, and pick out the error within minutes. But he couldn't remember to take a shower in the morning. There was one who could sit in his office thinking all day, then write a solution to a problem that the best engineers at IBM had been working on for months. But he needed help filling out the forms every time he had to send an express mail envelope. My favorite was the president and founder of the company. He was a genius, with many years of software and hardware development experience, who wrote columns for two different technical journals. He was the co-founder of a local technology council, and he could multiply and divide six-digit numbers in his head. However, eachweek when I presented financial statements to him, I had to explain all over again what each report was and the reason for it - every week.
Based on these experiences, I'll keep my IQ, and the CSQ (Common Sense Quotient) that I have!
I honestly don't know, I honestly don't care. I am fairly intelligent, it's all I need to know.
IQ tests are:
a) indicators of how good people are at IQ tests and nothing more;
b) so indebted to an academic interpretation of "intelligence" that they are pretty much useless when it comes to other fields (literally so - is a farmer more intelligent than an office administrator when it comes to producing food?); and
c) just another way "intelligent" people can humiliate others.
It is/was very high I was a Mensa member for a while but they lowered the entrance . IQ does not really mean a lot unless it is very low.Too high and the brain is like an impatient child running around all over the place and difficult to control or train
120 to 125, depnding on the test, and yes, I am smart enough to care. If I was really dumb I wouldn't understand the question.
I have never checked. But The test was designed by man to measure the intellect of man, makes me question how intelligent was the man who designed this test.
High enough. It's like penis size. The results are subjective, and it is only as good as what one does with it. :)
I think it varies among each test. So far, my average is about a 109.
Don't know, and frankly my dear, I don't give a damn
I've taken a few online IQ tests (but we're talking ONLINE IQ tests... so I can't say I trust them!) But I've gotten scores anywhere between 126-160... do I care? I'll be honest, it is kind of nice to see high numbers when you take those tests... otherwise I don't think I would have taken them!
148 but I think it is wrong. The tester looked strange at times! I think I should be lower.
It depends on:
A) How much sleep I get
B) The amount of prescription medication I'm on
C) If I feel like taking a test to prove what I already know.
tested between 148-160, and I couldn't care less. I mean, I'm glad to be intelligent, but don't care about the numbers. They are unreliable at best, and different tests use different scales, so even if you believed the number meant something concrete, you'd have to know the test it came from before comparing it to someone else's.
I personally think there are better ways of recognizing, as well as displaying, one's intellect.
When I was tested in school, my mother told me the number (156 on that particular one), and then lied to me about the "levels" they assign to the score ranges. She told me that 160 was genius, when (on that particular test) the actual "cutoff" was 140. She also told me that your IQ worked like muscle training - that using your mind more could raise your score, and mental atrophy would lower it. That was some of the best parenting I've ever seen. It gave me something to shoot for - if I really wanted to be a genius, I thought, I would have to exercise the heck out of my mind to get those last 4 points. It also kept me from getting too big for my breeches about the score (and labeling myself a genius in polite company, lol). But it still made me feel special and lucky to have that sort of baseline - and gave me a sense of responsibility to show that I appreciated what I'd been born with, and use it accordingly.
--145 and no, i don't give a rat's ass about it all. in fact i sort of doubt it's usefullness or accuracy.
I was in shock to find mine to be 58. I am ashamed of myself.
One hundred forty twelve.
Yes. Mine is 87. I find it very sad. It's just an online test though, and might not be accurate. It really put me down though.
According to that test, 147.
No, I don't really care. It hasn't helped or hindered my life knowing what it is.
125 wish it was lower...all the stupid people I know seem to be happy. The bright people think their not getting enough out of life.
My IQ score is high enough so that I know what it means. But low enough for me to want to do better.
It's high enough for me to realise that IQ tests are not a particually effective measure of intelligence. But low enough for me to miss that the previous statement is in fact a paradox.
I don't know the actual score, but whenever I applied for a job, I scored higher than their Managers and lost the job I was seeking.
So yes I do care that it labels you.
Not ALL smart people are intelligent! And not all intelligent people are doing what they love to do.
120 last time I checked. Do I care? Not really. It is what it is. You can't change it so why worry about it?
Yep....;-D....
It was 155 when tested years ago, but would be nearer 15.5 nowadays, after years of bad insomnia have wrecked my brain.
I had it tested long long time ago, and it was 136. But I've drank a lot of beer since then. I'm sure I've killed off a few of the important brain cells since then...
It's probably around 140 but I still don't know how to tie my shoe laces.
either i'm extremely stupid, or the only honest one here...mine was 115
I recently scored 130, it was a little higher a couple of years ago -- I don't really care much, however, I am somehow glad that my IQ's higher than the current president of the United States'. In fact, George W. Bush's IQ is 91.
I am really good looking.
Don't know, don't care.
What's my what?
I have ranged from 126 to 132.
Last time I checked it was 120.Honestly though, who cares what your IQ is?Should it matter, most people are smart who just didn't understand the questions. They then get a low IQ.
I don't know mine but I wouldn't mind knowing. Anyone who has bothered to find theirs out obviously cares.
I have no idea what mine is. Is there anywhere online I can give it a go? What is 143? Good, bad, or average?
I don't know what it is and not interested in finding out. Might be too depressing....
128
I'm lazy though -_-
184..
Probably because I'm a historian..
I think it's 12;)
Hmmm Beer
don't know, never been tested
Honestly I don't know and I don't care!
Don't know, don't care. Intelligence is an abstract concept that can't be definitively measured, unless you're really narrow-minded.
My IQ when I was tested in the Army was 156. That was 4 years ago.....;)
I did a random one on Facebook, not sure how reliable that is - but i scored 126.
When I took the Mensa test about 30 years ago, I scored 152.
It's my Internet Quickness.
40
Mine is supposedly "high" but IQ's don't mean crap to me, so I'm not going to bother saying what it is.
Just like "buxtonite ..house hubby extraordinaire68" said, there are lots of people out there with high IQ's who make bad life decisions.
I can't tell you how many people I know who have 100 IQ's who are successful entrepreneurs, and people with 180 IQ's who can't even tie their own shoes or go on one friggin' date without doing/saying something incredibly stupid or offensive!
If you scored high on an IQ test, congratulations, you did well on THAT test. And that's just about all your score tells you.
When did intelligence testing begin?

You're reading What's your IQ and do you care?

I like your brain, Carmella. Nice answer.

You do know the average IQ is going up according to trends. The bell curve really doesn't apply to it very well.
by Valparaiso on January 1st, 2007
Due to brain damage, drug use and other trauma, you will never have a true bell curve. It will be skewed toward the left or below average half. As any test is updated/re-normed, 100 remains the average. I don't doubt your assertion VAL, it just doesn't jive with what I know about statistics. And I've forgot more about stats than I want to think about.
by Mirage V2.0 AWOL on February 8th, 2007
Well Mirage they keep adjusting the scoreing system on the IQ test. So now a 100 is a hell of a lot harder to get then it was 20 years ago. And by the way I learned this in one of my two college stats courses.
by Valparaiso on February 8th, 2007
Very interesting VAL. I'd like to think as a species we are getting smarter. Smacks of evolution, doesn't it? That is curious enough to actually research.....RF
by Mirage V2.0 AWOL on February 8th, 2007
Or better education? Even if you belive in evolution you know it can't just happen that fast. And besides statistically speaking people with lower educations are having more kids then those with higher educations.
by Valparaiso on February 8th, 2007
VAL: Like the evo, joke? IQ is supposed to be inherent. It can't be taught. That is achievement testing.
by Mirage V2.0 AWOL on February 8th, 2007
Thats why IQ isn't real. Clone Abert Einstein, teach him how to read and write and then lock him up in a basement for 10 years and I'll bet I could best him on any IQ test. Now thats not to say that if we had the same education Einstein wouldn't blow me away, but I'm sorry people with better educations do better on IQ tests and its not always because they are smarter or learn faster.
by Valparaiso on February 8th, 2007
And education is a function of economic status which is a function of ability which is a function of genetics which has nothing to do with education. Just funning you. Thinking skills can be taught, this should happen in school. But you always reach a limit where you cannot teach a person more than he is capable of learning. Which is what IQ attempts to measure. Are you as tired of this as I am? Been fun, but I gotta move on....be seeing you..RF...BTW- you might consider teaching, you have didactic skills.

I'm a sunday school teacher, you are the third or fourth person that suggested that I take up teaching professionally.
by Valparaiso on February 9th, 2007
Teaching once a week is enough of a challenge. Why spoil a good thing? Be flattered. You're good!
by Mirage V2.0 AWOL on February 9th, 2007
Its not much of a challenge they are good kids. The hardest part is getting the 14 year old girls in my class (9/13 of the students are girls) to stop chatting. But they are getting better
