One thing comes to mind and that's your video settings in the bios. If you have an onboard vid chip as well as an AGP card, your bios may be set to boot on VGA (onboard) and your AGP disabled. Upon hitting del key, it may then suddenly "see" your AGP, explaining why after a reboot it's working. Check in your bios settings to see if this is the case, if you do have both the onboard and an AGP vid capability the onboard might be causing the issue with the AGP.
