I was an employer and no I would not hire a use to be gangster. Not because of his background but in the fact I do not think he would have qualified to do construction.
-
Depends on a thing or two, of course, but I probably wouldn't automatically disqualify for that fact.

Where I work, we do background checks on everyone before offering them a job. A few months back we tried to fight HR when they said we couldn't hire a guy because he'd gotten into some trouble a few years back. The guy was really up-front about everything, the usual fell-in-with-the-wrong-crowd type of deal, but he'd really turned things around the last few years due to having a daughter etc. None of that mattered, and as much as I wanted to hire the guy, HR wouldn't let us. So that's a long way of saying: yes, in some circumstances.

A "gangster" or a "gangsta"? There's a big difference between Tupac and Al Capone. I'd hire the mobster, for sure. Those boys are all about loyalty and dedication.
-
yes sure, i worked with an armed robber for a short time and for the first month i didn't know he was one then he told me and it changed nothing i though he was a nice honest guy,
-
yeah at least they would put their life on the job plus some just want a change
-
If he was qualified to do the job, yes. I would make sure a system of checks and balances was in place, so the burden of accountability would not rest in one person.
-
To be honest, no I wouldn't. I know you are saying "used to be", but... Have they really overcome what made them a gangster in the first place? I wouldn't want to take the chance. My answer may sound mean and cold (especially from someone like me), but it's at least honest. Good question, btw.

If they USED TO be a gangster how would the employer have any way of knowing? Its not something you put on your resume.
-
No I wouldn't, there are lots of people in my field and I feel that I have the right to choose the person least likely to make off with the computer parts.
-
I think it'd depend on the person & the job. More so the person than the job, though. There are former gangsters that truly regret that past & fight desperately to get past it. It's a difficult position to be in.
-
Probably not. I know most of the time, even when you're out of the gang, you're really not. I just wouldn't want any problems at my work and possibly risk the safety of others.
-
I would have to have a good look at their work records. Also, they would have had to have been out of the gang for a goodly amount of time. If they were fresh out of the gang, they would have a hard time talking me into it but it might be possible. I do not like gangstas but I support those who leave the gang (I have had some friends who got out successfully). However, I also know that they tend to be pulled back in. If I believe that the potential employee is not likely to be pulled back into the gang, yes, I would hire him. Of course, he would have to be the most qualified applicant for the job as well.

I am a felon. I will always be a felon. And though my felony is not due to being in a gang, based what I was charged with, it could be assumed that I was. Luckily for me, I have not had a problem finding a job, and over the years I have be able to advance in many different companies (sometimes even after being told my criminal status would not allow it. I would hire someone who was in a gang. Maybe I am partial because there were people there to take a chance on me. But I feel I am a pretty good judge of character, and if I feel you are trying to do the right thing, and get back on the straight and narrow, I will help you out. Not doing so will only lead you back down the path of crime that you are trying to get off.
