Yes there are gate to heaven (Rev. Chapter 21), No St. Peter will not be standing guard
-
The gates properly go to the New Jerusalem. and there are 12 of them, each made of a single gigantic pearl. Near as I can figure, the New Jerusalem will be a pretty version of a Borg Cube.

I cannot tell exactly why there are gates into Heaven, but I do know that God's Kingdom and His House is a "house of order". Perhaps, it is 'in order' to keep gates at the entrance to Heaven; I cannot say. What I CAN tell you is something about your 2nd Q: Peter held the Keys to the Kingdom of God on earth when he was here. In about 1829, then resurrected, it was his job, being the one to still hold those keys, to pass them on to the new prophet whom God had called in these Last Days - namely, the Prophet Joseph Smith. Today, as those Keys have been passed down from prophet to prophet, as anciently again, they reside in the hands of one Thomas S Monson. Further, Peter's work is not yet complete either. As one of Jesus' original 12 apostles, he will stand to judge in Israel, in Heaven: that is, along with the rest of the 12, he will judge the 12 Tribes of Israel. So he has a glorious job in front of him yet.

It is a gated community and Saint Peter is the groundskeeper. ;-)

I believe that heaven is much more above a human's imagination

Have you seen the neighborhood that place is in?

Of course the place has gates, has any of this stuff ever seemed welcoming and friendly to you? It sure hasn't to me, what with all of the judging and hypocrisy.
