Help answer this question below.

Whensomeone has a post office box and they die what happens to their mail if it is not picked up in 10 days even though there are family whose name is also on the box but they have just not gotten around to getting the mail

    Nothing is done to the mail in the box until the rent is past due. If other people get mail in the box, but it is rented to the deceased, you will need to talk to the post office about letting you rent the box. However, if you pay the rent on time, they will continue to place mail in the box and the deceased's mail will also be put in the box. If you do not wish to receive their mail, you can write "deceased" on the mail and drop it back in the mail.

    I believe the Post Office will retain the mail for up to one year in their "dead letter" file.

    If this is a shared mailbox, you will need to notify the Post Office that the other party is deceased. you probably will need to show proof of a death certificate. they will make a copy.
