There are an assortment of people all over the world who identify themselves as Satanists. Many are simply people who enjoy being shocking, will improvise bizarre rituals to "worship" the devil, and may engage in practices such as murder or child abuse which they aim to justify with their "religion".
Whilst, as they identify themselves as such, one could argue these people are Satanists of a kind (as one does not deny that the terrorist extremists of Al-Qu'ieda are Muslims, despite many contradictions between their activities and Islam as taught by the Qu'aran)their activities have little to do with the official Church of Satan, as established by Anton LaVey in the mid-twentieth century. (and of which rock star Marilyn Manson is famously a priest!)
The history of the Church is well-worth reading about but probably too detailed to go into here. The establisment of the religion itself grew out of LaVey's own hedonistic and anti-authoritarian philosophies, combined with his interest and practice of occult arts (including tarot divination, necromancy and magic spells) which he developed together with a group of like-minded individuals calling themselves The Order of the Trapezoid. It was not until the 1960's that he decided their shared beliefs merited the title of "religion" rather than mere philosophy. Consequently he produced the religion's primary text- The Satanic Bible.
The first half of the Bible reads more as a philosophical essay, explaining LaVey's objections to traditional religion (and Christianity in particular) and some ways he believes this can be counteracted. The second half details suggestions for rituals and spells.
LaVey's main theories hang around a few key beliefs:
- That man himself is his own highest authority. That to worship or bow down to any other being is to display weakness.
-Weakness, of the body, and particularly of the soul, is the highest sin, as it is man's sin against himself. Seems to be heavily influenced by the Nietzchean idea of the "Superman".
-That we should not deny our own true natures, which have capacity for spite, lust, envy and wrath.
-We should create our own rules, not unquestioningly follow those laid down by an outside authority (i.e. God)
-The only moral rule is that man is free to do as he wishes, to pursue his own pleasure and satisfaction, and indeed he has a duty to do so. He celebrates many of the traditional sins- such as materialism, gluttony, anger, and fornication. Interestingly, he does specify that a man should not do anything which interferes with another's ability to excercise his own free will- therefore he explicitly disallows acts of rape, or forcing a person to participate in Satanic ceremonies. He advocates acts of revenge, but states that the perpetrator should be prepared for the revengee to take equal and opposite action against him!
The main things that are often misunderstood about Satanists are:
- They do not worship Satan. They consider worship itself to be an act of weakness and submission, which is against the principles of the religion.
- They do not believe in a physical anti-christ. The idea of Satan or an anti-christ is a symbol for ideas which are out-of-place in conventional morality and outside of the pressures of what is considered acceptable behaviour. Some Satanists have claimed that in his day, Jesus himself was in fact a kind of anti-Christ!
- illegal activities are not tolerated within the official church. Members have in the past been expelled from the church for engaging in such activities.

Philman had a semantic difference with you.
That's what he stated in his first comment. There is no reason to come down on him for that. When the term "lengthy" is used in regard to religions, one must keep in mind that religions are thought of in terms of thousands of years. Tough there are many newer religions, their histories cannot be thought of as "lengthy."
But if you were speaking of the history of say, a restaurant, a history of forty years--or even twenty years--would be considered "lengthy."

I'm proud to say that I am a Satanist, more precisely, The Church of Satan kind, since people insist on considering "Devil-Worship" to be Satanism, despite the obvious differences *sigh*

1. Stupidity - The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It's too bad that stupidity isn't painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.
2. Pretentiousness - Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn't applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone's made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.
3. Solipsism - Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won't. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of "Do unto others as they do unto you." It's work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.
4. Self-deceit - It's in the "Nine Satanic Statements" but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it's fun, and with awareness. But then, it's not self-deceit!
5. Herd Conformity - That's obvious from a Satanic stance. It's all right to conform to a person's wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.
6. Lack of Perspective - Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints - know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.
7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies - Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it's something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.
8. Counterproductive Pride - That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you've painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I'm sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.
9. Lack of Aesthetics - This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It's not what's supposed to be pleasing - it's what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one's own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.
I. Respect not pity or weakness, for they are a disease which makes sick the strong.
II. Test always your strength, for therein lies success.
III. Seek happiness in victory - but never in peace.
IV. Enjoy a short rest, better than a long.
V. Come as a reaper, for thus you will sow.
VI. Never love anything so much you cannot see it die.
VII. Build not upon sand but upon rock And build not for today or yesterday but for all time.
VIII. Strive ever for more, for conquest is never done.
IX. And die rather than submit.
X. Forge not works of art but swords of death, for therein lies great art.
XI. Learn to raise yourself above yourself so you can triumph over all.
XII. The blood of the living makes good fertilizer for the seeds of the new.
XIII. He who stands atop the highest pyramid of skulls can see the furthest.
XIV. Discard not love but treat it as an imposter, but ever be just.
XV. All that is great is built upon sorrow.
XVI. Strive not only forwards, but upwards for greatness lies in the highest.
XVII. Come as a fresh strong wind that breaks yet also creates.
XVIII. Let love of life be a goal but let your highest goal be greatness.

To my knowledge, in its purist form its someone who puts the focus on themselves. 'How can I serve/pleasure my own needs.' Most religions are based on outward, selfless living.

I AM A CHRISTIAN i respect all religion because as a chrsition our main thing is freewill so u have the option to do what u want. i never disrespect other viewpoints so plz afford me the same courtsy its wierd to me to accept a firgure that is usually seen as such a leper ive sen other ppls post about christinity means accepting false whatever but it seems liek thru ther rules or principlas that anton levey is pushing his own opinion on ppl. just kuz u agree doesnt mean that its not a mans opinion thats being widely accepted 2.to me it seems to me the religion is uh freelance like do whatever you want as long as it doesnt hurt anyone whereas in Christianity its more of a do what u want but when they tiem comes if ur still doing your own thing u will be dealt with accordingly, i think the structure and discipline in christianity is great. God is like a loving father and he doesnt want to see anything happen to his children rather then explore hit the wall shake it off repeat.

(not sure if his affiliation was factual) was said to be high preist or whatver and the he initated Elvis by sodomizing him with a flaming introverted cross...is this this true? is this common practice? why and im asking with respect why woul du stand for something like that??? it seeems so dark (much of it biting bats heads, contorted images dark makeup...i know some of it is coustom and for entertainment purposes)i cried kuz i cant even wrao my mind around the fact that ppl do thigns like that. call me naive...and in christinaity u dont have to be accepted and u cant get kicked out...its all love. and with satanism love is weakness. THATS WRONG love is the strongest thing of all. i just think idk im getting emotional ive started crying again lol i just cant understand. ppl say christionity is not factual and that its inconsistent. it really isnt. you just have to allow your heart to accept that love.

A Satanist is generally a member of the Church of Satan, and subscribes to the philosophies of Anton Szandor LaVey. Most are Atheist. They celebrate the allegory and metaphor of human nature as represented by the archetype of Satan. Their beliefs have little to do with Christian beliefs in Satan.

the devil wants you to hate other people and join the dark side, and destroy yourself by loosing touch with life and god, it also wants you to do that to other people like the nazi's, so its better to avoid evil and doing harm to others cause then you will loose happiness and peace cause thse things are in god. also god is in all things and the head honcho so if you separate yourself from god you are all sorts of out of wack.
could just be something we made up to explain scary stuff in the world like nazis?
and then on the other hand why other stuff is so great like the sky
i think god is like the sky big airy nice to breath safe more or less beautiful all around you etc. reasurring

THE WAY TO PRACTICE SATANISM. THE FIVE DISTINCT STEPS:
1. In a room with dark curtains and no electrical light system with no electrical equipments running, no mirrors and no chairs or any place to sit, only the ground on a leather or hide of a buffalo or sheep (like the skin hides you use for your living room). Bring generous quantities of cheese (preferably Chevre or Chaumes or Limburger) for a latter use. Bring a freshly cut whole sheep or lamb or goat which is cleaned up completely inside (no intestines or viscera, just like for barbecue) by the butcher but deskinned. Position it on a platform or a rectangular wooden table where it can reach your chest level while you kneel down. Cover the head of the sheep with a Red square cotton cloth (7O X 50cms). When you are completely naked, light two king size candles on both sides. If you have a partner or partners ask them to do the same, remove clothes and let the girls be on your left and the guys on your right with you on the front of the middle of the table. Nobody should use anything artificial on their bodies like jewellery, wrist watch, hair clips, perfumes, hair gels, after shaves, or deos for at least 2 days, no use of soaps or shower gels for 2 days, chains, rings, shoes, socks, etc. (Except a video camera if you want an initial recording to show and learn from the mistakes in the beginning as the process is a bit complicated).
2. Take molten lard in a big container, 5 litres; everybody should have a Copper/Brass container for themselves, about the size of a coffee mug and half filled with the liquid lard. Each one of you apply the lard on the body of the sheep or lamb starting from you with the lard from your individual mugs one by one and then sit in the ground. Concentrate on Satan as an entity which is similar to you, that is everybody should concentrate on himself/herself. Remeber this is to remove the biasedness of Satan as a male form!
3. Once everybody is concentrated and silently praying to Satan in his mind, each one of you should go one by one, if it is a mixed crowd, a lady and a man should go and hug the carcass of the sheep together and kiss the body of the sheep 7 times. Once everybody has finished, everybody should be silent and touch their knees with their palms facing down on it and say "Lucifer here I come" in a whisper. After that, each one of you should randomly select a partner and go as a couple near the body of the sheep. Put each of your palms on the lard covering the sheep extervnal body and then press it on each others chest and rub three times in concentric circular movements, the ladies right to left and the guys left to right, repeating the prayer, "Let Satan enter you heart" repeatedly for three times. Then remove both hands from the respective chests and then apply the remaining lard on each others cheeks. The ritual is completed by kissing each other.
4. Everybody should then sit in their respective positions, close their eyes, start chanting the name of Satan with the image of themselves. Slowly they will realize that the form of Satan as a all powerful force is emanating in the deep recesses of their brain making them stimulated and full of life energy. Let everybody rise after the first movement of getting up by any participant. Let everybody hold hands in a circle and start circling the body of the sheep slowly. Chant the following message as you keep rotating. "Herein lie the master of the dark matter of the universe, the matter which is manifest the most within the tangible, the most powerful amongst the known and the unknown matter, the dark matter which is all powerful and omnipotent within the universes of time. Hail Lucifer. Hail Satan."
5. After this let everybody sit in the places, now the girls to your right and the guys to your left. You get up as the head priest and take a butcher's knife. Cut a piece of meat and place it on the red cloth covering the head with a silent prayer to Satan keeping eyes closed. as everybody to come one by one to you with their respective mugs. Cut a piece of meat the size of a steak and drop it into the mug. When everybody has got their part, let everybody sit. You also take your part. Put a bit of the cheese which was mentioned earlier and marinade the meat with it. Relish the dish as a food for Satan and take his blessings. After completing and emptying the mug, spit on it three times and everybody place their mugs around the carcass of the remaining body of the sheep, the girls' mugs on the left and the guys' on the right. Then pray to Satan one final time in your mind repeating his name 666 times. Then, slowly rise and go and collect the mugs randomly, the girls from the guys' side and vice versa. Take the residue in the mug and apply on your face as a lotion.
The meeting is adjourned and let everybody mingle and talk freely about the experience. Full secrecy should be maintained and only take people who are motivated on their own free will. The remaining carcass can then be barbecued for a feast after that. This ritual is advised usually on every fullmoon night and participants should be only contacted by word of mouth and without any writing or phone call or any other means.

satanism is stupid, the idea i think is sort of nihilistic although nihilism as a philosophy to discuss in school is ok. but as a spiritual person. basically statanism hates humanity and will hurt anyone to get ahead. so kinda like the jerry springer show? which i think is possessed by the devil, or that show with the strippers competeing for that flabby balding rock guy who was never a star.
basically its empty because god is full of love and good things for your life and peace? so if you want peace and happiness and fulfillment you sort of have to go towards the good light etc. so satanism is supposed to get you wealth and power maybe but the devil hates humans or evil hates humans, its like the Nazi's or something not a lot there so empty and does really bad things to europe and your town.

There was nothing non-factual in my answer. So "Lengthy" is subjective. I just think it's a bit sad that instead of following their religions and concentrating on being good, loving, humble people, people seem to waste a lot of time bickering about whose God is the biggest. Are all these snide and vindictive comments really necessary?

I merely stated fact. Yes you are right, length is subjective although in terms of talking about world religions, I truly do not think that 41 years is "lengthy" but that is just my opinion. As far as the founder of the "church" goes, those are facts, NOT my opinion.

Philman, I'm hurt... a little shocked... You just said that 41 years of 'being based off the thoughts of a liar' is worse than '2000 of murder'. Woah. To fuschia, I said what I said in defence of Philman's somewhat tactless response to your answer, and I'm saying this now in response to Philman's overly abusive language in regards to my belief system. I stated 'facts' too when I said that the Catholic church has an 'actually' lengthy history of violence, you didn't even respond to this, you just attacked the creator of my own belief system, this is called an "Ad Hominem" argument, it is fallacious and meaningless. It is much the same as the people who say "The Islamic Prophet Muhammed was epileptic, therefore the entire Qur'an is void"... Forget offensive, it's just meaningless, isn't it? If Anton lied & tried to shock people for his entire life, even while writting The Satanic Bible, does this make it's contents a lie, with no possible truth within them? I've read the book the entire way through, and it mirrors my life so completely, and it mirrors my thoughts entirely. I had never even heard about it before reading the book, it was like a key which unlocked my mind, so regardless of the author's history, you should address it's contents and it's followers, Anton has been dead for some years now, insulting his life achieves nothing : /

This is no way takes anything away from the fact that the Church itself remains Holy. It merely speaks to the fraility of the human condition. The only truth that exists is the word of God.

If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him" <-(In the context of the rest of Anton's writings, this does NOT mean physical harm, it reffers to an intellectual or metaphysical destruction (prove them wrong))

If you can find anything particularly sad about things like this, I'd love to hear 'why' EXACTLY. If you are going to be so offensive as to call my beliefs, my state of mind, my thoughts, my 'soul' if such a thing exists, 'quite sad', then I feel you owe it to me at the very least, to say 'why', else you shouldn't be speaking such harsh, abusive words.

Philman, one can easily say that your church was founded by a delusional man who believed demons caused illness (both physical and mental) and thought He was God. I can name at least half a dozen quotes of promises Jesus made that are patently untrue, which would make him a liar... Please stop casting aspersions on other religions. It is disrespectful, rude, abusive, and your religion is on no firmer ground (less, in my opinion...I haven't seen an Inquisition, Crusade, or war in the name of Satanism). By "cleaner record", I mean that Satanism does not quote a deity as saying you should marry your daughter to her rapist, burn a priest's daughter for having sex, commit genocide on roughly a dozen cultures, sacrifice the blood of innocent animals for your own shortcomings, etc. See above about the Inquisition and Crusades and then add the Witch Hysteria, etc. One religion is responsible for countless murders and tortures. The other IS NOT and NEVER HAS BEEN.

It's actually explicitly forbidden to kill -anything- in Satanism except in pure self defence or for food, so you'll never see any murder in the name of Satanism. Also rape is explicitly forbidden, and things like Slavery and Racism are completely opposed, etc. Satanism believes in happiness to everyone, at NO COST EVER to anyone else, it is only once someone breaks this rule that they are 'possibly' deemed unworthy of our love (they aren't deemed worth of punishment, they are deemed unworthy of love.)
