It's in the south. They have Southern accents, eat southern foods and enjoy the southern lifestyle. I don't need to cite no wonky census to tell you that one.

It greatly depends on what part of Kentucky you live in. You have the southern, western and eastern mountainous areas which I would say are mostly southern culturally. Then you have the north central half of the state around Louisville and Lexington where northern and southern culture mixes much more so. If you live in Northern Kentucky (Boone, Kenton and Campbell Counties) which is part of the Cincinnati Metro area its definitely midwestern and much more northern than southern. People like me...who moved up from Lexington get made fun of an called a hick, and you quickly learn to change your speech to fit in with the rest of Northern KY and Cincinnati. Cincinnati's airport is in Northern KY...so when you fly to Cincinnati your not in Ohio...your in KY. It takes about 35 miles of driving south into Kentucky before you start to loose the Cincinnati influence south on I-75.

Kentucky is one of those buffer zone type areas between subcultures, in this case midwestern and southern. There is alot of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio influence as well as that of North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee (as well as West Virginia but it's kind of a buffer zone itself). Overall, though I would have to say that Kentucky is very much it's own in most ways. From the unique architecture, to the agriculture, to the affinity for basketball over football (Illinois and Indiana have this same characteristic, but are not part of the Southeastern Confrence so they aren't as maverick as Kentucky being that they are Midwestern states). Kentucky is a bit of a maverick in it's location in our great nation. I would prefer to call it a true individual that bucks the norm from time to time.

c'mon, they have southern accents. typical kentucky meals comprise of meat that is deep fried, vegetables that are cooked in bacon grease, a side of buscuits or cornbread, and sweet tea. people there consider themselves to be southern unless they live in the far northernest part. kentucky is the south, hands down and anyone from kentucky who says it isn't the south is just worried about their state being affiliated with negative southern steryotypes.
