    Asker's Pick

Selected by the asker, Sea Siren. (What's this?)

Yes it is annoying, and yes I am also thinking of beating up anyone I meet in the future who has a nintendo.

Because they are not checking to see if it's been asked before and only care about the points they may get before it's flagged. And many people don't know that duplicates are not allowed here since none of the questions expire.

I think is because they want other people to answer their questions, is personal.

  • They don't use the search box to check and see if the question has already been asked apparently. One possibility anyway.

They should be aware of it based on how the new question facility works. It's the AB staff who evidently don't catch this. I have asked a question and then have seen a question go by that is the same as mine with a couple of wording changes.

The biggest reason people do this is to take advantage of questions that have attracted lots of answers and points for the question.

Some may not know they are asking duplicates but I have seen some that post the same question 4 ot 5 times within a 12 hour period and change the wording 1 or 2 words so they KNOW what they are doing..whether it's for points or for chances of increase of answers. who knows but when it's the same ? with 1 word difference then they know what they are doing. Some people just are inpatient. They think that once their question post they should get 100 answers within 5 minutes and it doesn't work that way. I had 1 question posted for 2 weeks and I only have 3 answers. I have 1 question posted for 2 days and I have 1 answer.some people get no answers to questions. Some people think their questions are more important than everyone elses and that justifies it..I think it's childish and immature. Some people do post questions that are repeats and it's hard not to..

They didn't check out the box that shows similar questions. But, I've done that mistake plenty of times, can't really criticize anyone else.
But, I must admit, it gets slightly annoying that every third new question in the horror movie section is "what's your favourite horror movie" or which one is the scariest. I mean these two questions appear three times a week. :/

some are new users that dont realize that duplicates are flagged and consequently dont check to see if its been asked previously. there are others who are pointmongers ~ they dont care if someone else asked the question previously and try to pull a fast one.

however, im neither of the above and ive had several duplicate questions flagged recently. i believe this is due to an answerbag search engine problem. i first search for similar questions in the keyword search for answers field and scroll down the page for possible duplicates. i also search the three most likely duplicates that pop up on the submission page. but not all the duplicates questions have been coming up in my search. thats why i have asked duplicates.

Sometimes when you search for a question, you don't find one like you are going to ask. Then, someone happens to find one that could be kind of like the one you asked and they mark it as duplicate.

Other times, people don't take the time to look first. Or, they may just want more points. I really don't care to ask questions. Most of the questions I would even think to ask have already been asked.

To maximize the likelihood of it being answered.
    ------
    It ain't for points.
That was more a concern on Yahoo!Answers
    ---Where I would cross-post questions.
    ------
Now please check out my question:
Are multiple accounts and cross-posting permitted on Answerbag, and if so, are they common (/not uncommon) and easily tolerated?

Not really, just flag them as duplicates or spam .. whatever they are. That usually takes care of them.

I really don't get the purpose of the snes list. Seems like if you wanted to troll a website you would ask different questions if you wanted to annoy people.

    Yarnlady is happy every day

During spring break this becomes a common occurrence, because all the new members who come on here don't seem to have the time to look up the "search for answers" section to find out if they have already been asked.

I could make enough moderation points off all the duplicates that I wouldn't even have to answer any questions and still have a good day.

I'm not sure how the duplicate search works, which words it keys on. There are times I've marked something as duplicate because I know I've seen and answered it before, but when I'm doing a duplicate search, previous versions don't show up. For instance, if one person uses the phrasing "what's your favorite breed of dog?" and the next person asks "what breed of dog do you like best?" it may not show up as a duplicate.

Because How it works on me is I ask the question on search for answers and it says your question hasn't been asked yet so I write it and send it and later it gets duplicated or I am writing it and the same exact question I asked was asked 4 minutes before me because I took to long writing it. As the proof I have 90 duplicated questions.
