I was married to my wife for 14 years before she died and I told her at least once every day that I loved her and she did the same thing. For us it never got old. I just wish I could hear her say it one more time.

I know, from experience, that it is not sufficent for me to tell my wife, “I told you twelve years ago that I love you.  If that changes, I'll let you know.”

The best love songs never use the word at all.

It sounds like he might be trying to reassure you or himself; that may be what is bothering you. Why would reassurance be needed?

There are lots of psychological tangles that we get into about "love", which have little to do with real love. Often we look to romantic relationships as a way to resolve internal issues like insecurity, fear, and low self-esteem, etc. We may expect our partner to fill the "void" we feel inside, and repetitive, automatic behavior like constantly proclaiming our love can be one expression of this.

The word love is exactly that, a word. Love should be a feeling expressed without words. I myself believe it it said and used way too loosely. I feel if you have to question the word you have lost touch with its meaning. My father has said I love you only once that I can remember. But with every hug and smile I get from him I know in my heart he loved me. Same with my pets, the cuddles and muh muh's prove it. :)

I think it only loses its meaning if the person does not mean it.
I am probably biased here as I say "I love you" to my partner frequently (a few times a day). I say it though, only when I feel it. If I am not feeling loving, I don't say it - and I never expect an "I love you, too" in return. My partner says "I love you" quite infrequently, and it does mean a heap when he does utter it, but it means a lot to him when I say it even with my frequency.
I can't imagine suggesting to your boyfriend to say it less, but if it really makes you uncomfortable then maybe you could ask him to do that.

I think you should say it as often as you mean it. I don't think repeatedly being told you are loved causes the phrase to lose its meaning. It is when it is said without the underlying feeling that the phrase loses its meaning.

oh dear - there is little more off-putting than the over-the-top suffocation of a wimpish BF - it might just be quicker to put a pillow over your own face and get it over and done with.

My bf too says a lot of it!!! And expects to hear it back!!! I dont !!! I just say it when i truly mean it!!!SO once we spoke about it and i said to him that ill say it when i truly truly feel like it!! its not something that you should feel bad about! And now he understands! And he too realised that it isnt something that you should say for the sake of it!!! I think its loses its charm if you do!!!!My advice is talk to him about it!!! At least he shouldnt expect you to say it always!

Saying "I love you" can be meant in many different ways and can be meant in many different ways.

If you are in a relationship with someone and they truly have a relationship of deep love for one another they often say, "I love you!" I don't think it can be said too much then. I know I love my Amy very much and I will tell the whole world I do as well as her. I have such a special love for her there is none other for me but her. My greatest desire in life is to have her with me for the rest of our lives. I am hoping this will happen soon. I will tell her everyday several times each day how much I love her. I know I will hear the same back from her. It will be meant with all sincerity both ways because we do love each other that much!

I have only been the person to say 'I love you' first in a relationship once, and I think that the words have a lot of weight to them. It's not an expression that people should just throw around, but if you feel it, then why not say it? It can't lose it's truth just because it's repeated frequently - I mean, you wouldn't say that racism issues become less important because they recieve more media coverage now than they used to. Attention to something does not destroy it's meaning or the truth behind it.

perhaps saying it less does increase the value of each time you say it...until of course, the opportunity to say it is no longer there. If that happens you'll realize you did not say it enough, and wish you had.
