If you are taking a "holiday" day, then why should they care?

Canadian Public Sector workers are getting a raw deal. My employer lets me have 3 days to help out with D of E, and they help out with some of the costs of the children doing it (equipment, tents, etc). It benefits my work, because I stay loyal to them, I stay fit(tish) to continue helping with D of E, and I learn leadership, teamworking skills that can be utilised at my work.

As long as you are open with your employer about it and there are no ethical conflicts involved, I don't see why it wouldn't be acceptable.

In fact, in the Public Service of Canada, employees are entitled to one day of special leave each year to perform volunteer work.

I'm American, and - as long as what I'm doing doesn't violate my noncompete agreement - with my company it is my business and my discretion how to use my personal time.
