Why are babies so prone to getting ear infections?

  • The Eustachian tubes in babies and young children are more horizontal than inclined and therefore do not drain as well as older children's tubes. Therefore, any fluid that is infected with bacteria will stay there longer and have more time to develop an infection.

    As children grow, the tubes become less horizontal and drain more easily.

    For the same reason women are more prone to getting bladder infections. The shorter the canal, the shorter the distance germs have to travel that begin infections.
