Help answer this question below.

Do you put your end punctuation "after the quotation"? or "before it?" Moreover, is the rule the same for (parenthesis marks)? or are end punctuations also (inside the parenthesis?)

    The way I learned it (which may or may not be right), commas and periods *always* go inside the quotation marks. Question marks and exclamation marks go inside the quotation marks if they refer to the quote, and outside if they refer to the sentence the quote is a part of. (i.e. He asked, "Why did you do that?" vs. Why did he say, "These are the times that try men's souls"?)

    I believe the rule is different for parentheses. If the parenthetical comment is a part of a sentence, the ending punctuation should go outside of the parenthesis mark. However, if the entire sentence or question is contained within the parentheses, the closing mark should go inside.

    I think that's all right, anyway.
