  • The Second battle of Ypres, from April to May 1915 was important to Canadian history for two main reasons. First, it was the first time that any colonial army defeated a European army on European soil. It also happened to be the first use of chemical weapons. Secondly, it established for the Canadians a reputation for bravery and dependability that stirred feelings of national pride and glory. It proved to be a mixed blessing as the Canadian would be tapped to lead the assault at Passchendale, and at Dieppe during World War 2.
