What is Obama's ethnic background? I just read this week he is 50% white, 6.25% African and 63.75% Arabic. If this is true how can he claim to be African American and not Arab American? Is there a web site you definately know of to confirm or disclaim?

Umm, the percentages you listed add up to 120%. No one is "120%" anything. Is the last number really 43.75%? If I were Obama, I would just say "I'm of mixed race" and leave it at that.

You're right, I had a typeo...it said 43.75 not 63.75. Thank you for pointing that out. But my question still has not been answered. Is this true or not? No opinions, please, just an answer that is fact.

It has been reported many many times over the last year. His father is or was from Kenya, which is in east Africa, a long way from the Middle East. His mother was from Kansas, like me, which means she was cool, like me. He looks like your basic black guy, not somebody with only one of his 16 great-great-grandparents being from Africa. He does not look Arabic. This story was probably spread by people wishing to spread rumors that he's an Arab Muslim, and therefore un-American.

Goodness gracious, as an Australian, I have heard his biogrpahy so many times. His father was a Kenyan nominal Muslim,and his mother American. They separated when he was young, and the mother remarried, to an Indonesian Muslim. They, too, divorced and the mother brought Barack to America, where he was raised, converted to Christianity and the rest is history. No Arabic, nor is he a Muslim.Where on earth have you been? And, as someone else asked, what does it matter anyway? I have no opinions on his policies, not being American, but he seems like a fine sort of man, well educated and good-looking/charming.

Somebody needs go ask teacher to look at the globe after class. Kenya is in East Africa on the Indian Ocean and not really all that far from Saudi Arabia. Ever notice how some Kenyans and most Somalis and Ethiopians look very different than, say, Nigerians??? It's called Geography, geniuses! As a rule, there's a good bit of Arab blood flowing through the easterners' veins. The populations have intermingled for centuries. Saying there are no Arabs in East Africa is like saying there are no Mexicans in Texas. The corrected numbers above on Obama's ethnic mix are most likely generally correct. Although, I do disagree with them stopping short at his mother by simply saying she's white. Nobody is pure, and her background needs to be figured into the mix, as well.

Everytime I see comments about race in this election I always think of a line in a song by the White Stripes "Why dont you kick yourself out, you're an immigrant too..." LOL It doesn't matter what his ethnic background is. This country is a melting pot which makes it such a great place. And it really doesn't matter who ended up winning the election. The people of this country wanted to see an intelligent person elected president who they feel could get us outta this economic and financial hardship and lead us into a more promising future. The people spoke last night and I think they made a great choice. Woo hoo!!

Mr. Obama is 50% Caucasian, that from his mother. Mr Obama’s father was FROM KENYA, but ethnically Arabic, with only 1 relative ethnically African Negro - a maternal great-grandparent (Sen. Obama's great-great grandparent, thus the 6.25% ethnic contribution to the senator's ethnic composition. That means that Mr. Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother's side. He is 43.75% Arabic, and 6.25% African Negro from his father's side. By the way, in case you are curious, you must be at least 12.5% of the racial component to claim minority status. Mr. Obama, does not meet legal ethical claim to be African-American. Example… Charlese Theron, is 100% South African, but 100% Caucasian. I dont know why we can't just be honest about this... if we arent racists it shouldn't matter that we are honest.
