  • They could be laying you off or they could be firing you. If they are laying you off it is nowhere near as bad on your job record as a firing. However, that phrase annoys the hell out of me (we're letting you go). I know that they are trying to sugar coat it. Just say "you're fired" or "you're laid off."
  • Euphemism... Sleeping Together=Fornicating Having An Affair=Adultery Putting to Sleep=Mercy Killing Would you like them to say "We are kicking your ass to the curb"?
  • With all the workplace violence prevention of today, there are actual seminars that coach employers on how to word things tactfully so as to avoid incident. Nobody wants some disgruntled employee coming in and going postal after being fired.
  • A lot of things have changed since "politically correct" came on the scene. Whose to say what might have happened to cause upper management to change the customary phrase for being fired.
