Faye Wong (Wang Fei) is actually a Chinese entertainer, and her concert performances are usually confined to Chinese-speaking regions such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia as well as Beijing and other major mainland China cities. She has, however, toured Japan. In 2001, for example, she performed in Tokyo's Budokan. In the mid-1990s, she toured North America, with stops at such cities as New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Toronto. She is arguably the most famous female singer in the Chinese-speaking world, and even though she is now pregnant and has retreated from the entertainment scene, her fans are eagerly awaiting word of her delivery (sometime in mid-2006) and her comeback. She is also a very popular and talented actress, appearing in numerous movies and TV series. One of the series is "Usokoi," produced and distributed in Japan in 2001. She is noted for her roles in Wong Kar-Wai films such as "Chungking Express" (1994), "Chinese Odyssey 2002" (Wong Kar-Wai was the producer), and "2046" (2004-5). She is also a hugely successful model who has and does represent major product lines. She is also probably the most photographed person in Asia, appearing in countless magazines and newspapers. Even now, while she's "hiding away" in Beijing with her husband, Li Yapeng, and daughter, Dou Jing Tong (or Tong Tong), she's hounded by paparazzi. For example, at a friend's recent rock concert, news camera crews sneaked in to the theater and secretly filmed Faye and her husband, who were sitting in the audience. Hopefully, with the eyes of the world on Beijing (Faye's hometown) for the 2008 Summer Olympics, Faye will be back in the recording studio, onstage, and in front of cameras. This writer can't think of a more fitting icon for Beijing than Faye Wong, a truly gifted singer, talented actress, and exquisitely beautiful model.
