  • I think that can control the way you feel to a certain extent by thinking positive thoughts and smiling to convince yourself you are enjoying something. Once I was at volleyball and I was having a bad day and I wasn't having a good time so I kept smiling and laughing even when I felt bad and pretty soon I felt a lot better.
  • You definitely cannot control everything in your head. Most people are almost totally unaware of what is going on in their head, but if they bothered to stop and observe it they would see that its almost totally out of control. Try this experiment: sit in a chair and don't move for 5 minutes. Don't think anything at all. Just stop having thoughts altogether. If you try the experiment (thinking about the experiment doesn't count, you have to actually do it!) you'll find out what everybody finds out: the thoughts just flow without any control or apparent source. The thoughts just jump around from topic to topic, seemingly at random. This is called "monkey mind" in Zen: its the ordinary, untrained level of consciousness with which we live our lives. The notion that we can control how we feel and think is actually just another one of these uncontrollable thoughts: you and I didn't make that one up either.
