Well, if money is not a consideration (and perhaps even if it is) I would go for the geek every time. :) PS: There seems to be a big demand for computers with XP installed, instead of Vista. I wonder when the computer retailers will catch on.

careful with used ones as quite often they are being sold because they have problems the original owner didnt know how to fix, if your willing to format it and put a clean copy of windows on you'd most likely be OK but that just makes it complicated. Refurbs tend to be fairly good but make sure they have a warranty, standard is six months unless you buy an extended one with most refurb companies and ive found them to be as well built and supported(better in some cases) than brandname companies. Local geeks can be hit or miss, find a few people who have bought a computer off them before and ask them about it and if you get good feedback then geek it is!

I've heard if you contact Dell directly you can get XP Pro installed on your computer.
-
Custom built - hands down.
-
Nearly 80% PCs sold in India are custom built by local geeks. I have two such PCs, and they are better than many branded ones.
-
You already have the tower, then bring it to your local geeks and have them refurbish it with updated hardware.

Support your local geek! If you can't buy online then you'll be sorry if you visit http://www.bytemecomputers.net Prices rock.
-
I don't know your reason for not buying online. If it is a question of availability, Dell and Microsoft have relented and you can still order a PC with XP.
-
You should contact me and buy mine. I have one for sale. It is in mint condition. Selling it, with many extras, for $750.00

Go to Office Depot online, check out what is for sale refurb...bet you can find what you are looking for...keep checking with them, if they don't have it right at this moment they may get it in the near future....but should also keep in mind that you should always be able to find a puter professional to install XP and take out Vista for you, although at a price

Custom built by the local geek.

You should definitely have one custom-built. It'll be cheaper overall, and it'll be easier to service because you won't be dealing with proprietary components.

If you aren't savvy enough to build your own, I would recommend the local g33k. If nothing else, a good g33k won't sell you stuff you don't need. Refurbs are generally a good deal, but you have less choice about what you get. That means you may pay a little more for stuff you don't want/need. Private Party is only really good if you know exactly what you're looking for. I've had luck from private parties, but they were my friends who just upgraded and offered me a deal on their old stuff.

go to www.tigerdirect.com and buy a intel based pc with no os. On the same site buy a copy of xp before they are all gone and install it your self, a 3yr old could do it

1. You say you can't buy online b/c you have no credit card. Do you know anybody with a credit card? Can you pay that person cash to help you buy a PC online? (If you don't have the cash, then what's your plan?) 2. Why not just buy Windows XP and install it on your current PC? (Or buy an XP-compatible PC locally?) If you can't buy online, then why not visit your nearest town with a computer store? There are still plenty of places that sell systems with Windows XP. If you get a system with Windows Vista Business then you also get a "downgrade" licence if you want to run XP instead. If you do get one custom made by the local geek, remember its probably not going to do you any favours calling him a geek :)
