The best boss I ever had was a Board of 5 appointed people. We came to an understanding about how to manage different funded programs, I managed the staff, and they let me manage. We met once a month. Never had them give me h____. The State who supervised the Programs didn't either. In fact I got error free audits most of the time.

I currently have the best boss I ever had. He's open to my ideas, he's supportive and he lets me do my job without hanging over me all the time. The worst boss I ever had would tell me that my subordinates should or shouldn't do various things. Then when one of them asked him if he told me to pass that on to them, he denied it. He wasn't supportive at all. +5

The beast boss i had was really a nice person and didn't care if you goofed around as long as all your work got done on time. Worst boss would complain about the slightest thing. For example I had just gotten my pants out of the dryer 10 min before I left for work so they were a little wrinkled. I had to listen to a 15 min lecture about personal appearance and how it reflected the company. Who the hell looks at your pants?

Best: easygoing, funny, competent, keeps the crap off the employees while getting out of their way. . Worst: stressed ("Would you rather I do this or that?" "Uh! UH! Blob, that question makes me feel trapped!"), very stressful to work with, projecting of her unadmirable beliefs & mental processes onto others, oblivious to what was really going on, irrationally if not kafkaesquely judgmental, micromanaging, overly protective of what she saw as her responsibilities, played favorites, wouldn't listen, brown-noser to her boss, etc. Suffice it to say that I'm glad to be out of there.

He was always in more trouble than any of us and needed "our" good grace.

My best manager was Casey Stengel because he was a firm believer in sleeping on the job. My worst was Billy Martin because he was hyper all the time and just having him around made my blood pressure go up.
