Yes. A snail is pretty much a slug with a hard shell large enough to fit its entire body in as a defence mechanism.

Not really. The snail is 'attached' to his shell - pretty much like a turtle. This is not like a hermit crab who finds an empty shell from some other dead creature and just 'wears' it. The shell is part of the snail.

no. snails are attached to their shells! they will die without it. its like their back bone.

No. The shell pretty much serves as skeleton and skin for everything in it. the snail's heart and lungs and such are all inside the shell. The only thing on the outside is the head(so brain, eyes, mouth) and the strip of muscle that it has for a foot. Even if you somehow took the shell off leaving everything in it intact, it'd die quickly.
