Because flashlights pick up more detail. Also they pick up things like fibres and cast moveable shadows.

Detectives make a very conscious effort not to compromise the integrity of a crime scene. Any detail disturbed, including lights on/off, could mess up an important clue or piece of evidence until they've had a chance to thoroughly assess the situation first. (EDIT) I agree with many other posters here that it's also for a spooky atmosphere and tension. They did the same thing in "SE7EN" when they were first checking out the fat guy's apartment.

I have wondered that myself many times. Maybe to leave the crime scene just as it was? Looks like it would be easier to miss something in the dark, with only a flashlight. Probably just adding to the drama. I love CSI anyway. ;-)

You'd think it was so they wouldn't disturb the crime scene but then again, you'd think they would be liable to trip over something! lol! I can't imagine that after a brief once over, that they would finally turn on the lights because there is just too great a risk at missing something small. So I bet they do it for affect. I mean, what if you examine a crime scene in the daytime? Are you going to wait and come back at night before checking things out even once? No, you'd start your investigation right away.

They think it adds to the suspenseful mood for them to always be in the dark.

The flashlight thing always got my attention but I let it go. Then there was an episode with a body at a construction site. It's bright sunshine. The CSI's show up, straight from the gym or tanning salon, look around and of course don't find anything... until they turn on the flashlights.

I really should not try and answer this question. But do to I am here. I'll just say this much. They don't need to fear as much about setting off a hidden "?" by turning on a light.......Now you put 2 & 2 together. Good Luck!!!!

Don't know, but the rooms always seem smoky too.

um. it's a tv show?

A flashlight can be used at crime scenes to see fibers and other trace evidence. To see this in action, look at your computer desk. See much? Now take a flashlight and shine it on the desk at an angle. Voila! There's stuff there! And you now have a science fair project on a budget!

Heck if I know! They do the same thing on all the crime shows and movies. They did it in the X-Files. They did it in Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon. The do it on Law & Order -- all of them. Where is there a professional crime investigator who can REALLY answer this questions?
