a bail bondsman pays your bail to keep you out of jail. A bounty hunter is hired by the bails bondman if you should jump bail, to bring you back.

A bailbondsman, puts the money up for the bail. A bounty hunter is hired by the bondsman to collect the fugitive that jumps the bail. Often they are someone who does both but not necessarily. A bondsman may hire a hunter if he wishes or he may himself be a hunter.

Many times, they are one and the same I believe. I guess it makes sense (if you can handle it) to safeguard your own money.
