Actually, Don Dotter is not far wrong, and whoever gave him that "not useful" rating could have at least had the courtesy to set the record straight. Just after World War II, military pilots referred to UFO's as "Foos". Probably their way of trying to make a word out of the acronym. If the Air Force spotted a UFO on a radar screen, naturally they dispatched fighters to intercept, in the chance that the UFO might possibly be enemy aircraft. Sometimes the fighters got a glimpse of these UFO's in flight, but usually not. These missions became a source of humor for these pilots, and thus they referred to themselves as "Foo Fighters".
