  • At Sunday River Ski Resort in Maine back in the early 1990s. We were finishing up a run from the top and that trail finished on a section of dirt access road. The last time I looked at my computer it touched 51mph. This was on a fully rigid bike - pre suspension. But generally I might hit 35-40mph on occaision on some of the trails near here. That one time at 51mph told me I was definitely riding past my abilities. I was holding on with absolutely no control except to try and stay on the road. I lucked out.
  • Palm Springs, Ca off road 55mph and 65mph on the road bike, Northern Italy
  • Sorry this is about the bent I was riding in the 35th RAGBRAI. Coming down the hill into Belleview, Iowa I was going 49 and the handle bars were shimmying. I was flying past triangle bikes who's riders were crouched down to decrease wind resistance. I won't do that again. Can you imagine the road rash?
