Why are the Pittsburgh Pirates frequently called the 'Bucs'?

    I believe this is because it is short for "Buccaneers," another word for pirate.

    It's short for "Buccaneers".
    .
    However these days they should be called "Poo" as in "Poo' Small Market Team with a Cheap Owner"
    .
    (of course it has another meaning too - but I won't go there!)
