Help answer this question below.

My 7 year old still sucks his thumb. We have tried everything. Does anyone have any tricks or suggestions on how we stop this.

    get him a stuffed animal he really likes. tell him to hug it really tight every time he wants to suck his thumb. it worked for me.

    Just go get your kid braces now, if he/she keeps sucking their thumb they will need them in no time. the metal of the braces should make it uncomfortable for your child to suck their thumb.

    I sucked my thumb till I was 11. Eventually she will stop. Save your money for braces cause she will have an overbite.

    my cousin had the same problem. my uncle put a little bit of tobasco sauce on her thumb. he told her it was medicine. it worked like a charm. but good luck

    What my folks did to get me to stop biting my nails was dip my finger tips in the juice of a jalapeno jar. Something similar might work in this case as well.

    there is something on the market that once put on the thumb leaves a bad taste. i don't know what it is called. ask the pharmacist.

    i used to suck my thumb.. i was 8, one night before bed, i placed my hands behind my pillow behind my head.. the next day i repeated it.. after day 3 i was done sucking my finger. he'll eventually stop sucking his thumb. my mom used to buy me this nailpolish and she'd put it on my thumb.. man it tasted terrible.. and on the package it said if you bite or suck on your finger nail it will crack.. i realized now it wasn't true.. but i was sure scared of it! it obviously didn't work though.. it just made me want to suck my thumb even more. best way to stop is to have him stop it himself...

    Well let her go to the toilet about an hour before sleeping..
    Then dont let her drink or eat anything!
    And day by day give her small quantities of water just before sleeping!
    And in about 2 months she will be ok:)
    That worked perfectly with my brother:D

    i must admit,my daughter is 19,at times while sleeping she still sucks her thumb,my advice dont make a big deal out of it,the more you push against it he will still do it,almost as a security thing. he will grow out of it.

    He'll probably stop when he's ready. The kids in school will apply pressure. If this is the worst problem you ever have with him, count your blessings.

    Tell your child when he is ready to try to stop sucking his thumb, to let you know.
    Then try a reward system.

    I was a very stubborn kid and often didn't do things my parents wanted to make me do just because they wanted to force me to be a certain way.
    It may be stubbornness. So if you've tried everything, just let go and see what happens. It will eventually take care of itself anyway.

    Peer pressure alone should cure him. Unless he doesn't suck his thumb in front of his friends/classmates. If that's the case, then he has some self-control afterall -- or should I say "selective self-control".
