Tools gave us more control over our environment: safer, more secure shelters; the ability to develop agriculture; weapons for food procurement and protection; a way to cut and form clothing; etc. Agriculture gave way to surplus and the ability to free our time for other pursuits separate from food procurement. This allowed society to stabilize and develop. Yup, definitely the wedge.
