How many pictures exactly does a 512 mb memory card hold on a 5 megapixle camera

    It will be dependent on the amount of memory used. A fine photo will take up more memory than a standard one. So taking fine pictures you will not be able to take as many as standrad ones.

    The amount of memory that a picture uses depends on the complexity of the photo. An exact amount can't be determined. Most cameras will show the number of available pictures when powered on with whatever size memory. Example: my Canon A70 says i have 76 pics with a 128 MB card.

    according to my manual (which is for the DSC-H7 Sony camera) the chart on page 33 states that the 512 MB can store (remember when seeing VGA it basically means that it is intended for email size format -> 640 x 480) roughly 2,904 (JPEG) images.

    There is no answer to this question as you have stated it. There is no "exact" number, as it will depend entirely on the resolution that yuo've taken the pic in. Many cameras are adjustable in this regard. Generally, the higher the resolution, the larger the space it will take up on the card and the fewer pictures you can store at that resolution.
