Why do celebrities vary their birthdays? For example, Gabrielle, the soul singer, appears to have three different birthdays (April 16, May 16 and July 19). How are we supposed to know which is right?

Maybe that's the point. A lot of celebrities don't like "not having a life of their own". Greta Garbo went to extreme measures to keep her life private, even though she was a big star.
