It is silly, kind of like bowing your head to pray or holding your hand over your heart with the pledge of allegance. You are doing it for the people around you and could mean nothing about your personal beliefs.

are you really a citizen of this country? you seem to be so antagonistic toward many of the traditional customs that people love to do. yes, you John zip55121. its no wonder you act like you do if you think there is no heaven. you are just an angry devorced male. you could use some counseling.

Questioning my citizenship for thinking silly customs are silly?I suppose you think wearing a flag lapel pin means you are patriotic and support an amendment to ban desecration of the flag.
I was an Eagle scout and vollunteer for the scouts still.
I give blood regularily.
I probably could use some counseling for the divorce.
I suppose you might be an angry insecure republican who feels threatened when some silly customs are challenged.

Yes, the lapel pin and a flag sticker on my car means I am patriotic. And Yes, the usa flag is sacred material and should not be burned or used for clothing material. Next thing you will think is its okay to burn a dollar bill. Or write a slogan across the face of George Washington. Respect isnt silly. It holds our country together. It isnt meaningless. Did you feel like you do now before your divorce? And as a physician, were you were an atheist and did you give credit to a higher power for the wonder of the human body?

I said I treat it with respect. It doesn't matter to me what other people do to the flag. It is just a piece of cloth. I would treat it with respect. It bothers me to see it misused but I would defend that persons right to express themselves.
Wearing a lapel pin doesn't necessarily mean you are more patriotic than someone who doesn't. You are advertising your patriatism. It doesn't make you better than someone who chooses not to advertise their patriatism.
Religion has never been good on exploring the wonder of the human body. It took science to do that.
Respect is earned.

why cant we just nullify religion and accept a higher power for the reason why we are here?
by DudeLer 2 on May 28th, 2008
john55121, seems a bit strange that you were an Eagle scout and are still involved w the scouts, yet you have issues about this kind of thing. It would seem you would be PROMOTING respect of this sort if anything, rather than putting it down or dismissing it.

I was just taking a contrary position. However I do have problems with someone thinking it is proof you are patriotic or feel respectful from some symbolic act like taking your hat off.

thats nice, you were being the devil's advocate. now we dont really know what you believe. of course children love to wave the usa flag around. what do they know of patriotism? last year, we had a fourth of july ceremony, and the local alien mexicans started waving the mexican flag about...lots of them. that didnt go over very well. so the next day, they were all waving usa flags. that doesnt mean their alegiance changed. did you see the picture of Mr.Bush with his hand over his guts while the people behind him had their hands over their hearts? that shows you where his heart is.
