I suppose you could concentrate on where the famous 'Jolly Roger' symbol came from. As you know, the skull and crossed bones is a symbol of mortality, and it was the banner used by the Knights Templar on board their ships. After the massacre on Fri Oct 13 (where Friday 13th came from) those Knights who escaped to sea were branded traitor and Europe was enjoined to kill them should they ever set foot on land. With no choice they turned to piracy, and the flag became known and feared as a flag of piracy. This happened long before Blackbeard, btw.
