The best way is to do it from home and don't share any information with any co-workers, even if you think they are your close friend. They say something to someone else and the line of gossip carries on. Your boss can't scold you for wanting to find another job that would be better for you or your future... especially if there is not a non-compete contract you are under.

Use some of the new job boards that allow you to remain anonymous such as climber.com and realmatch.com. These boards show the candidate without revealing their name or company history names. Once you receive a message of interest, make sure your resume contains the words - 'for confidential review only' so the hiring authority realizes this interaction must remain confidential.
