I want to regularly leave my laptop locked in my shed where I have an office space. It gets very cold at night here. Should I leave the laptop running to generate enough heat to avoid problems when I start work in the morning?

possibly, if temperatures drop belo 5 degrees centigrade the laptop screen will be permanently damaged as LCD/TFT displays do not cope with cold very well. the rest of the laptop will be fine

I would suggest you take your laptop inside with you, and maybe slip it under your bed. It will not last in a non-temperature controlled environment.
